High aspect vs low aspect wings

The lines are really blurring so I'm going to put this into windsurfing... Foil surfer/pumper compares high aspect vs low aspect wings. This should make all of you who picked up the Moses 1100 feel pretty good

Also pumps with a smaller wing and the results are a bit surprising.

Sailworks has a killer deal on a carbon Moses with the 693 wing. Combine this with the 1100 wing and you’d be set.

Re: High aspect vs low aspect wings

Like sails there are a lot of other differences between wings than AR. Thickness of the "airfoil" and the dihedral, anhedral and in the case of the I-99 "winglets" all could make a difference. The interesting thing is how little difference they seemed to make. I'm not sure exactly what the "pumping" speed that he measured would mean to wind/wingfoilers. I don't see us trying to see how long we could pump out board if we don't have enough. The "stall speed" may be the most important measure if we are looking for early take-off though I don't think he found any difference there. The gliding distance probably would be important to allowing us to coast through holes.

The high AR wing he was using seems to have a fairly flat shape which ought to be easier (and cheaper) to make than the complex shape of the I-99. It could be that we will find out in a few years it doesn't really make that much difference and the longer skinnier, cheaper wings will be the way to go and has the easiest take off.

Since I have a HA, MA and LA wings I guess I will keep busy if we ever get enough wind to try them all on the same day. Lately I have decided to stick with the LA until since it does seem easiest to use.

Re: High aspect vs low aspect wings

Great Info...I found some interesting segments from the Winging community, suggesting that instead of focussing on your wing"kite", size, more attention should be paid to adjusting your foil wings. Currently, I am using HUGE foil wings to help me learn. But when the wind gets heavy, I have nothing to drop down to....making control a problem. I am definitely thinking of a smaller High Aspect Foil Wing, Go Foil GL180, to fill this gap. Go Foil states the GL series would double the speed vs my Maliko foils. That would be pretty wild!

Maybe you need to consider variable geometry wings like this. https://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/history/pastprojects/AD1/index.html

The military gave up on swept wing a while back didn't they? I think we need to go directly to Stealth wings so motor boats and jet skis won't see us coming.....

Oh, they do a good job of that already. Sixteen feet high red cloth and we're more stealthy than the Invisible Man.

Oh, Bill, seeing that airplane reminds me of how dogs walk sideways.

Randy, there haven't been any new variable geometry aircraft fielded by the US military since the B-1 was introduced in 1986. I think if there was a compelling reason, variable geometry might be used again. The down side is the complexity, weight, & maintenance. All aircraft are tradeoffs (foils too apparently) so you pick your poison.
