Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

F-One and Manta have inflatables that can be used with either a windsurfing rig or a wing. Best part - they use a tuttle. Also inflate to much higher pressure than a convention SUP. (20 - 30 PSI.)

This is an interesting DIY, though I haven't seen a follow up video with him actually foiling on his SUP. I have seen one of this guy with a wing however, Not sure it would work though. Inflatable SUP's that size are not very fast and getting up to foiling speed may not happen.

For all the windsurfing fans - watch for the streak as the windsurfer goes past (0:28). It's like a Porsche GT3 going past my minivan. Also, all that beach front for an industrial complex. That's surely not Florida. Lol

So now you are over your crush on Wingsurfing and want to back your first love WindsurFINg...(remember there is no FIN in Windfoil.) Damn - I just dropped 3 pandemics worth of stimulus checks on Wingfoil gear....maybe I can cancel the order. Lol

I'm in love with it all. Topical because a wingdinging friend today was talking about changing to a faster foil wing. But the REAL story here is you did WHAT? You can't leave it at that. DETAILS, MAN, DETAILS!

So you can just use a twin tip kitesurfer (so long as you have enough skill, lots of wind and a big wing.)

Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

What size wing do you need? These guys have a guide. (They have 3 different wings: Beginner, Advanced and Power (my labels not theirs.) They have a guide for each depending on your size, etc. This is for their wings but could probably be generalized a bit. The numbers seems fairly realistic. Click on the purchase guide for whatever wing you pick. Short answer - For my size 4m takes 17 kts. (Or darn near 20 mph). Seems going to 5m is a big jump (11 kts). For big guys you are looking at close to 25 mph for 4 m. Go with 5 or 7 instead. Or the Super Power.....

Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

First this was a very small sample size while I was pretty far away from anyone else, and not paying a lot of attention to them. With that said, Windsurfers - 1 or 2 (me and maybe one other guy, but don't remember.) Windfoilers- 1 (me). Wingsuper - 1 (me). Wingfoilers I think 3 (I saw at least 3 different wings foiling.) Kitesurfers - 3+? I usually saw one or 2, and a 3rd one with foil kite (as opposed to a kitefoil). However, I was paying little attention to the kiters so could have been more than I noticed. There was probably only one day I saw wingfoilers, but probably 3 days kiters were out for at least a while. T-storms had a bad habit of showing up once the wind got going, and hanging around much of the day.

I did try my foil board with a 37 cm weed fin. Found that by moving the base up a couple of inches it planes off pretty well - much better than last fall when I tried it the first time with the mast base quite far back. Worked well for about 5 minutes until the storm came by.......

Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

I'd be desperately trying to remember the difference between shark and dolphin fins if I saw that when I was sailing.

Interesting thread on nw-windtalk about wingfoiling v. windfoiling. Guy says he can get by with a smaller wing than sail. Attributes that to the weight difference between a sail rig (which adds weight) vs. a wing (which tends to lift reducing weight.) It sounds like he was using the same board, but I will try to find out.

Pretty simple actually - if you are standing on your board, it's a dolphin. If you are waterstarting, it's a shark.

Protip: If you see a vertical tail fin, it'a shark. Dolphins rear fins are horizontal.

Then there is the whole issue of whether it is a porpoise or a dolphin. Or a shark or a killer whale......
