Got my eye on Wednesday late morning. May 6th

Checking In now that I have caught the total bug!!! I wish my body was as ready as my mind. Still a little sore from Thursday/Friday. The wind doesn't look straight West on Wednesday. Does that mean people will end up somewhere else? I would rather have a few other sailors around so let me know where people are heading. Thanks

P.S. If someone wants to try the Wing, just ask.

Neil

NW is sideshore at Van Pugh. No reason not to go there especially mid-week. If you feel more secure at Old Fed - someone might join you there.

Van Pugh is better on NW than West, No wind shadow.
I’m planning on heading there Tomorrow afternoon and Wednesday.

Re: Got my eye on Wednesday late morning. May 6th

I was about to leave for Old Federal yesterday and the sky at my house got really dark. I didn't want to drive 55 minutes only to turn around, so saved my energy for today. I am planning going early today because high 20's isn't fun for me yet. Hoping to foil right as the wind starts to increase but before it starts to smoke. Hoping to get there are 10:30ish. Heading to VP Neil

I hope you had your 4m with you because it seemed pretty windy on my side of town for that Naish 6m.

Re: Got my eye on Wednesday late morning. May 6th

When I arrived at VP, Zee was sitting it our having become way overpowered on his 6.5m. Marcel was rigging a 5.0m, while his wife and kids enjoyed the warm, sunny lake shore. I rigged my 6.0m and headed out to discover 20 mph lulls & 32 mph gusts. Then the gust speed became the average wind speed. I tightened my outhaul and kept going until the temp. dropped from 68ºF to 56ºF. I was wearing a shortie & getting cold. During this time I kept an eye on Neil who got OP'd and had to swim after his 6.0m wing, and then got OP'd & blown downwind on his 4.0 wing. Just as I was changing, the wind ramped up to maybe 40 mph and Chris, Eric & Kai were blown down and managed to sail back during lulls. I'll let William continue the report from here...

Photo 1 - Big wind hits as Kai is blown down. He's under the cloud of spray.
Photo 2 - Chris Pyron 4.5m sail overpowered & heading for shore
Photo 3 - Kai sailing into shore on 4.7m overpowered
Photo 4 - Neil about to briefly foil with 4.0m wing

Re: Got my eye on Wednesday late morning. May 6th

I'd decided to come in as I was overpowered with a 4.2 on the foil. Surfing was fun but coming back through the tight swell - not so much. I was standing on the shore with Chris V. when he noticed a big patch of white upwind. I thought it was just the sunlight on the water but he thought it was a monster gust. Chris was right. it went from 20-30+ to a pretty solid 35-40 in about a minute and stayed cranked for about twenty. About as hard as I've seen it blow on Lanier in a long while (outside of a storm).

The dropping temperature made it too cold to wait around for another round so a bunch of us retired for the day. Ed and Al showed up and went out on 4.7s. They seemed to be going okay but looks like they had to deal with some holes.

While I was in the car, I got a text from Mark Smith down at West Point. Eddie B had gone down to sail with him and John M. They, too, had gotten blasted off the water for a bit. Mark sent some pics. Good to hear from the West Point crew. We owe them a visit.

Photo 5 - No wonder I was cold. It was 53. Yesterday, I was in a shorty.

My wind meter at Clark’s Hill hit 47mph (fortunately I was off the water)! Now will someone tell our Army Corp of freaking dumb a***** to open our launches again? All our parks and legal launches are still closed.

I went to Van Pugh, watched Neil and Z, clocked a gust of 25.9 MPH on the beach, went home and took a nap.

I may sail this afternoon, Thursday, 10-15 looks better than 10-40.

For once (it turns out) I made the right call for my level and didn't bother to drive up.
Webguy, maybe those mindfulness exercises working after all!?

I too have my eye on the weather for today.

Too bad. You missed a marvelous 5.7 day. ROFL

Seriously, to quote the sage advice of one K. Rogers, a true genteman: You gotta know when to hold them and when to fold them.

Today looks a lot more civil, but, alas, other duties require my attention.
