Maybe Gainesville should become Duck City?

With all the recent rain, Gainesville, known as the Poultry Capital of the World, maybe should take a note from Bangladesh and raise ducks.

Quote:
A four-hour drive away, in Bangladesh’s wetland region, Shopna Akter’s life, too, has changed. She used to raise chickens while her husband worked as a laborer on rice paddies nearby. Climate change has made that way of life unpredictable, though—sudden floods caused rice crops and chickens to perish and incomes to plummet. Recently the couple switched and began raising ducks, a business that is now prospering. The reason for their success? “Ducks,” Akter told me matter-of-factly, “can swim.”

I resent this post. Gainesville is a lovey place filled with many wonderful Gainesvillians, including me. Most drive white pickup trucks with muddy tires but, nonetheless, they are trying to succeed the best they can.

So how do you know chickens can't swim? Have you ever thrown one in the lake to see if it could swim? The answer is NO!

FYI: Chickens can swim so we are just fine up here, thank you very much, NOT.

As always, in the pursuit of knowledge, I looked this up: https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/can-chickens-swim/

They can swim - for a short while. Then, they become little chicken Titanics.

Quote:
So it appears that chickens do have an innate ability to swim. It seems that it is built into their survival system from long ago; it is not a skill they frequently use.

Their feathers are not waterproof, they do not secrete the oil that ducks do – once they get sodden wet the chicken will sink like a stone.

As the old saying goes: if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck, it's not a chicken. Lol

I'd go for it as long as he kills them. If he just arrests them and let's them go after a while, not interested.

The Governor’s office just released the following statement:

In light of the current water supply conditions at Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona I am hereby ordering the following practices be implemented to deal with the problem:

1.) Odd-Even watering. Odd number houses will be required to water on even numbered days. Even numbered houses will water on odd numbered days.
2.) Car-washing. All car owners are ordered to immediately go out and wash their cars. Driving a dirty car will be fined $25 for each infraction.
3.) Dishwashing. Mandatory dishwashing is ordered. All plates must be sparkling clear. Hand washing is recommended as it uses more water.
4.) Clean clothes. There will be a fine of $25 for anyone wearing dirty clothes.
5.) Hydration. It is time for all Georgians to recognize the value of good hydration. Everyone should take a drink of water. No soda, canned drinks, or milk allowed. Coffee, tea or anything made from water will be just fine.
6.) Toilet flushing. All citizens will be required to flush toilets after each use. No exceptions. Even if you only “went a little.” All outhouses are hereby ordered closed.

Lake level last reported at 1076.66 only about 6 inches short of the all time record. With today's rains flowing in, seems likely the record will be met or exceeded. Not a good situation - I wouldn't be surprised to see all the parks closed if this keeps up. I'm not sure of what criteria the COE uses to decide that. Does anyone have any idea?

You guys are so easily swayed. This post was about ducks and chickens. Where did all these other comments come from?

Now you have me worried about the upcoming election.

Just when you think you have it bad

https://www.freep.com/story/news/2020/01/23/great-lakes-water-levels-flooding/4554143002/

Quote:
Record high water levels on the Great Lakes are wreaking havoc along Michigan’s coastlines, swallowing beaches and houses, swamping sewer systems, flooding roads and public buildings and turning farm fields into lakes. .... The high water levels in Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron are breaking records, and state officials fear that the waters could rise another foot in 2020 if rainy weather comes anywhere near the deluges that hit the state last year.

Lake Superior currently sits at a mean elevation for January of 602.76 feet, almost an inch above its 1986 record. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water level records for the Great Lakes date to 1918.

Quote:
It was a wild afternoon for local law enforcement. The body of a man believed to have fired shots after a wreck on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Friday has been pulled from Lake Lanier.

It all started with a two-vehicle wreck on PIB and Shadburn Ferry Road around 4:15pm. Witnesses told Gwinnett County police officers that a man with an AK-style rifle exited one of the cars in the crash. Officers heard gunshots nearby. The man carrying the rifle had carjacked a driver. Police attempted to stop the suspect. The suspect took off in the stolen car. Officers followed the him from the wreck to Shoal Creek Park where he drove through the park and into the lake. The carjacking suspect began shooting at officers as the stolen car hit the water and began to sink. His bullets riddled a police vehicle. Officers shot back.

Re: Maybe Gainesville should become Duck City?

What the news didn't report was that the bad guy was only trying to throw a chicken into the lake to see if it could swim. He never got that far because law enforcement stopped him dead in his tracks.

Makes me think, I sure would hate not making a jibe, falling in the water, and seeing a ghost on the bottom. Freaky!!!

Gainesville, are you paying attention? The future is in ducks! Lol

China could deploy 100,000 ducks to neighbouring Pakistan to help tackle swarms of crop-eating locusts, according to reports.

Pakistan declared an emergency earlier this month saying locust numbers were the worst in more than two decades.
....
Lu Lizhi, a senior researcher with the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told Bloomberg that the ducks are "biological weapons". He said that while chickens could eat about 70 locusts in one day a duck could devour more than three times that number.

"Ducks like to stay in a group so they are easier to manage than chickens," he told Chinese media.
