Mon, Tues, Wed 12/30,31, 1/1

Current forecasts calling for good W winds on all 3 days, temps in mid to high 40s. I am interested in sailing possibly all 3 days (roughly 10-11am to 2-4pm). Probably VP but open to others, preferably at Lanier. Please post if you are intending on going, which days, place, rough ETA.

I am in for Monday lunchtime.
I can go to VP or OF depending on where others want to go

I am in for mid-day Monday as well. Van Pugh looks like the best launch based on Sun. Fx.

If the sun is shining I am going to try and get photos on the water with the GoPro.
I will go upwind and past the windshadow and then drift down thru the fetches.
Webguy and others can use me as Jibe buoy maybe we can get some good photos.

That was a good day on the water.

I took photos of Ed, Hami, and Chris but they were too far away ... and Ed was going too fast

I will take more photos next year. Fly or sail by as close as you can (~15-30 feet from me) otherwise the GoPro makes it look like you are really far away

Tomorrow looks pretty windy. For Wed, windy.com is showing 9-14. Today was very, very enjoyable. NIce to be able to share it with so many friends! Biggrin

Langdon took a few pics while on the water. Hopefully, he'll post some. Edit: He did. Yes 3

Highlight of the day: While we are zipping into 4/3 wetsuits and drysuits, a young lady puts her SUP in the water and paddles off with nary any neoprene. Shok Having to get in chest deep with the foil confirmed my decision to wear black to be a good one.

Hi, Just signed up on the site. I bought myself a SUP Foil and Duotone Wing for Christmas. I went out the the last couple days at St Mnt but not enough wind to get up on foil. I am going to VP at 10:00am Tuesday, 12/31, Would love a couple tips on getting up on the foil for the first time. Hope to meet a couple people and say hi.

Welcome aboard Neil,

I'm afraid you are breaking new ground for this area. I'm pretty sure some of us will be asking you how it's done after you get flying.....Some of us have foil experience, but to my knowledge - no one has gotten flying with a wing.

After making that investment I'd suggest going south to Florida and see if you can find lessons. There is unlikely to be anyone here who knows anything other than what we've learned on videos. (Possibly someone is into wing foil that we don't know about but they haven't yet been seen.)

As for where to go - yeah St. Mtn is unlikely to ever be any good. If you go to VP you will probably find a number of guys with windsurf and windfoil experience today. If you go to Old Fed you will may find a some kitesurfers/kite foilers today. Probably will not find any one sup/wing foiling at either place. Personally, I'd drive by both places (they are not that far apart) and talk to whoever seems helpful.

BTW - I just got a wing myself, but am planing on starting out on land with my all terrain board. I haven't trashed it by the time the weather gets warmer, I was going to start out on water with a big SUP, then try it with my windfoil board.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

You, dog! That's a pretty neat Christmas present. A few of us here are quite envious.

How many liters is the board? Is it possible to take along a paddle or another Plan B? Seconding what Randy said - most often, the people you see flying a wing already have some foil experience. A lot of kiters and some SUP foilers will get that experience behind a boat. All it takes is about an hour of time to get a feel for it.

Seconding the second points Randy said. VP is a side shore launch and quite often with a wind shadow that extends out 100 yds or more. We put up with it because once you are out, you are in the cleanest and most open west/nw winds on the lake. Side shore means that if things aren't working and you are having trouble getting back, you end up somewhere downwind which can vary from a mile walk back to uber ride back. Old Federal is more of an onshore launch (as long as you stay left) which means you just sit on your board and get blown back home. We also go to VP because of the decent swell in the middle which will be fun for you when you've become comfortable with it.

Seconding the third thing - Stone Mtn Lake will suck for any real windsport because it's narrow, trees and that big rock. It really takes 5-800 ft for the wind to settle down coming over just trees. Here's a wiki article that explains it more in detail if you are curious: https://windsportatlanta.com/wiki/Fetch That's why we "windsporters" windsurf/kite/and now wing will tend to select just a few spots to congregate.

All the cautionary notes aside - we are very excited and happy that you are taking this big step. We can tell you a bit about foiling from a windfoil and kitefoil perspective so we'll try our best to help. Probably you'll see folks up at VP from about noon on as schedules allow. I'm sure you are already planning to be dressing warmly if you are going out - we are all in 4/3 wetsuits or drysuits and once you get in the mid 40s, hat and some sort of hand covering is necessary.

Oh boy, I AM excited. Biggrin btw, post here, a new thread or PM any of us if we can answer more.

Hey,
Nice to meet you all today. I got a bit frustrated with the heavy gusts. I am brand new with the wing so I guess I am paying my dues. Hopefully next time I can be practicing with you guys around for more on the spot tips. I got up briefly today and then the wind pooped out or I was heading for that island. Also would have been more pleasurable if the temps were a little warmer.

See you next time!!

Re: Mon, Tues, Wed 12/30,31, 1/1

Neil,
Great to meet you and Reggie. Yeah, you picked a tough day and a tough launch. Even in the open, it was gusty. Gilmer Airport (Gainesville) was reporting pretty much 15-25 all afternoon. That's not the easy, steady 15-18 mph tradewinds you see in the videos! I'll bet that pretty soon, though, you'll be much more comfortable and looking forward to these days.

The good news with all the wind was the swell in the middle was really fun to play with on the foil. I let the sail almost all the way out and just surfed down one to the next. Great fun. The foil also made it easy to get back upwind for another go.

If you guys need anything in the meantime, give us a shout!

Anyone planning on sailing today (Wed 1/1)? Afternoon Forecast showing W10-16, temps around 50. I am hoping to be at VP or OF (depending on any interests) around 12-1.

Good day for Chris, Hamdi and I. Well, until I came out of ripping jibe, stuffed the board and did a legit "SendIT" cannonball. Head first dive into the water. Lol Oh well....
