Luder-*-itz

Hang out with the fast crowd for a bit. The boys are beefy, the sails all have a ton of downhaul, the boards are missiles and only have two foot straps. Plus, Bjorn D. still ripping it in middle age - he hit 50 this year on the GPS.

Re: Luder-*-itz

I wonder if anyone has considered using asymmetric fins or body fairings? Hoerner's books on lift & drag have some data on drag of human bodies. For example, "without clothing, the drag is 5 to 10% less than listed."

Btw, his books also contain data on hydrofoils, if you're into that sort of thing...

I'm 95% sure they are using asym fins - their boards are, too. I know that the speed guys in Oz do at their local patch.

This video is interesting. AA was not only using an asy but it was hydrophobic on one side

Body fairings are more difficult because of varying body positions - turn the fairing 10 degrees and you've actually made things worse. This was a big deal back in the early days of aero bike helmets, iirc, especially ones with long fairings. As soon as the cyclist looked down, the long fairing suddenly became an air brake. Most of the Luderitz gang do wear pretty smooth skinned clothing like the ski racing crowd. Another factor may be the safety factor: you don't want anything protruding so when you hit the water, you aren't torqued around. I know that's a big deal for the helmets.

How is the video being shot (what attachment?) at the 9:00+ mark?

I wonder if aligning the battens better with the streamlines would make enough difference. It'd make rigging & derigging a PITA

Just missed the 500m record by 2/100s of a knot... Shok I'd think the helmet cam needs to go.Watching the top of that sail is amazing in those winds.

Great story about Eric Beale, former world speed record holder, who sailed at this year's Luderitz season. From Jonathan Weston's Maui Glory Days blog:
