A man was found dead Friday at Tidwell Park on Lake Lanier, according to authorities.The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the report came in at 2:28 p.m. The body was discovered on a rocky beach near the park's boat ramp at the end of a peninsula by a person walking their dog.
A gun was located at the scene near the man's body, authorities said, and a preliminary investigation suggests that the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and the Forsyth County Coroner.
Authorities are now attempting to contact the man's next of kin.
Tidwell Park is closed while detectives with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate the scene.
Edit: No disrespect intended to his family. One of the traumatic parts of suicide is the effect on first responders and those who come upon the scene. Sadly, those in pain can't always understand how their intended action will affect others.
I don't know what it is about Tidwell, but it seems to be a sort of problematic spot. In 2015 a lady drove off the boat ramp and drowned in her car. I recall vaguely someone being killed there many years ago but can't find anything to document that. I also had two windsurf boards stolen from there and one other was almost stolen (or mistaken for trash). It is interesting that I see Police fairly often at Mary Alice Park, but didn't seem them that often at Tidwell.
