What I learned windfoil racing

Hope it's helpful. For those curious, events coming up in Feb and March in warm, sunny Florida.

Re: What I learned windfoil racing

We need to talk about "Time on the Water" and about road trips to places where there is wind.

I agree with Gene and others that TOW is very important.

There were quite a few sailors / foilers down in Tampa that spend more hours on the water in 2 weeks than some of us spend all year.

We also need to discuss how to better utilize the windy days that we have here on Lanier. Especially for the folks that are new to windsurfing or are returning to windsurfing. ( example safe / easy launches and having a boat or jetski in the water to provide an insurance policy/ take photos/ snacks and a break are a plus for someone who is uphauling every 5 minutes).

I was completely amazed how good those kids were down there.

Lots of practice and lots of support down at CCSC

Okay, let's talk! Biggrin

Yeah, what Langdon said. Talked to a fellow adult competitor who estimated he's foiled about 120 times since beginning of summer... with his foil and big sail he was getting in an hour and half almost every day before the afternoon thunderstorms.

Florida windsurfer: So how often do you windsurf?

Me: If I'm lucky, maybe a couple times a week.

FW: Is that limited because of your schedule?

Me: No, I'm blessed with a flexible schedule. That's all the wind we have.

FW: Shok

I ( and maybe Webguy) am also going to make a trip to Jacksonville to foil.
We met a guy at CCSC that foils there often.

At a little over 5 hours from Lanier that would provide a warmer and doable weekend trip

I’d be up for a trip to Jacksonville or anywhere for that matter. Wondering where he fouls in Jacksonville also where there are deeper waters to foil in around the panhandle.

Langdon forwarded me google links.

Theoretically, they are marked on the map as well.

Re: What I learned windfoil racing

Does anyone else have places that they would like to do trips to?
I know for many its a trip to Hatteras in the late Spring, but where would you like to go while the weather is cold?

Generally speaking from now to the 1st of the year people are making plans for Thanksgiving until Nee Year. But that still leaves January till May to make warm water trips.

We need to plan several because not all would be able to go to just one.

Nitro?
Cp?
Ed?
Doug?
Trey?
Hamdi?
David?
Dave?
Roiger?
Alex?
Alan?
Pat?
Bill?
Jim C?
Foildude?
Barrett?
Gene?
Randy?
Webguy?
Who am I missing?

Sounds like what you guys learned from race foiling is that you want more.......

Randy,
I was literally the worst foiler there and I still had a good time. Everyone was nice to me and helpful.

I needs more of whatever they got going on there.

Re: What I learned windfoil racing

As far as locations go the two places I love the most - OBX and Destin are iffy for half of what I liked - shallow water. Not an advantage for foiling. For winter OBX is probably too cold and too far. Destin closer but not a lot better as far as temps go. The other places I tried - St Augustine and Cocoa/Bannana R are far and shallow from what I remember but it has been a long time. So I'm not much help.

I just need a fountain of youth and maybe some bigger cahonas.

I know the choctawhatchee bay between Destin Beach and Ft Walton is really shallow, I was touching bottom with a 48cm fin there at times.
I didn't have any issues sailing in the Gulf just outside of Henderson Beach State Park

Other options for foiling in the panhandle maybe someone could provide info on
St Andrews bay (Alligator Point Or the Kayak launch)
Port St Joe
Shell Point
The bay east of the Pensacola bridge

Still in for Jacksonville too if that happens.

Re: What I learned windfoil racing

I think Shell Point is too shallow for foiling even with a short mast. I know its deeper futher out and in some channels. But even then I was told there was several shallow places.
I was dragging a 38cm fin on a longboard when it was close to low tide

Mobile Bay (Fairhope) seems to be just as close according to G Maps as most of the Florida Panhandle based on time. Gulf Shores is maybe 25 min further. St. Simons is about 20 min closer.
