Re: Wed Thur Fri Dawn Patrol

Anybody in today? I may hit VP later this morning after pretending to work for a bit.

Sailed 5.0 at Tidwell from 9:45 to 10.45. Measured 12-14 mph when I arrived, would guess it was 10ish when I finished. The new wing makes a big difference. Much easier to control it - everything is moving a lot slower and allows use of smaller sail. I probably could have rigged up to 6 or 7, but was I pretty done by then anyway. Only one head bath today, but that was at the end when I was sort asking for trouble.

Jim C. and I did VP. I rigged a bit earlier and got the stronger wind. Made the run up to Vanns. Wind was more East than usual so I was able to make it in one shot. Waved at Dave D. who was just getting out with someone else who I didn't recognize.

By the time Jim got in, the sun had come out and everything had gone flukey. We both made the best of it. It's still warm and we don't neoprene so all in all, a good day. GPS says I "planed" 20 miles and slogged 5 but I need to adjust the threshold since it picked up some time on the foil as non-planing. Jibes were a mess today as I got cocky and was trying all sorts of things. Best part of the off/on wind was the water would flatten out by the next gust so one could scream across dead flat water. Super, super fun.

I think the threshold is wired in. If you select a windsurf session it is a little below 12. If kitesurf it seems to be about 4. (I guess that makes sense, if you are moving all while kitesurfing you have to be planing, since kiteboards don't sail displacement.) A better number would be somewhere from 8-10 maybe.

Looks like they kind of interpolate it from your speeds, maybe? My planing speed seemed to be set around the minimum of my polar plot. I've emailed them to see what they say.

Edit: you can see on the speed graph when the sun came out about a third of the way through the session. Sad

That's the same planing speed I get everytime when I was selecting windsurf session as my default. (I changed it to kitesurf since it sets my planing threshold lower.) 4 is too low, but it is better than 12, because I usually see the speed jump when it gets over 4 to 9 or more. Ideally it would be say 5 or 6. Here is my graph, Looking at yours it seems pretty clear anytime you are above 5 or so, you are planing.

BTW - one thing it shows is that if foil at a much lower speed with the new wing. While perhaps undesirable to some, for me that perfect because things happen slower and it is is easier to think about what I'm doing. Plus - I'm going nowhere anyway - I don't need to rush.
