An ounce of prevention

is worth a 500 yd swim of cure. Using the idle summer days to replace my tendons. If yours are more than a few years old, consider replacing them. They'll age just sitting on a shelf. The old flesh colored Streamlined tendons will absolutely disintegrate.

More info: https://shop.wind-nc.com/blogs/windsurfing-info/comparing-windsurfing-ujs-streamlined-and-chinook-tendon-compatibility (sponsoring members get a 10% discount!)

Edit: this is what happens when you sail on an old tendon joint. Luckily, it was shallow enough I could walk back.

I see these break at least once a year. I think Trey had one go on him in Hatteras recently. A guy in the Gorge got seperated from his rig and board few days ago due to one breaking and had to swim to shore.

Less than $20 for a new one and 5 min of work to replace it....seems silly not to change every 2-3 years, and really hits home when you are 1/2 mile out and one breaks on you. And while at it, its a good idea to inspect all your boom and downhaul lines. The one on the boom clamp is set once and never looked at again, but it still wears out over time. I had one break in Costa Rica few years ago on a rental boom.

They all should have a safety line which would at least allow you to get back to shore. Why do people use those - they do seem the most prone to breaking?

Yep, and I may be wrong but I think they stopped offering the Hour Glass design...which seemed to be stronger. It's not on Chinook website or the Gorge stores. But the plus side of the Tendon is that it's easy to replace.

I noticed about a year ago that the rubber ones were disappearing. A shame as I really like them in the two bolt plates.

The problem with the safety rope is that, while you still have your rig, often the broken joint will damage or punch a hole in the deck. Some of the newer ones have multiple ropes so it reduces that.

Randy, that pic of the Streamlined gave me PTSD.
