GPS Phone App

There are a lot of gems sometimes linked on the right hand side of the front page. Here's one that caught my eye:

https://groups.io/g/nw-windtalk/topic/gps_app_for_windsurfing/32811803?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,2,0,32811803

It had info on a free Android phone app you can use to track your speed, distance, track, and direction. Cool graphs. You can use it with you garmin GPS (loading in the current.gpx file) or by itself. I downloaded it and here are some screen shots from tonight when my wife and I went for a walk. You need a waterproof bag of course, and place to carry it, but that's a minor problem. It is oriented to windsurfing or kitesurfing but you can really use it for any activity you might otherwise use a GPC (walking, running, biking, SUP, etc).

It's called Windsport tracker on the google play store.

Up to now I have been computing all the same data but it was complicated because I had to use my GPS, then enter the current file into GPSVisualizer.com to convert to spreadsheet format, then load it into my spreadsheet to compute the data. Seems like this does it all at once.

Re: GPS Phone App

Here are some of the pics from a short sessions on Saturday (data from my GPS). The polar chart may be of interest to racers, and of course, if you didn't know where you were sailing the map certainly is a benefit. Lol BTW - the planing speed seems to be an input they came up with, but there may be a way to adjust that.

What are you using for a waterproof bag?

Re: GPS Phone App

I haven't worked that out completely. I have a waterproof bag (from TJ Max or Target, not sure where it was bought) I used yesterday with my phone on my SUP and that worked ok, but that's not much of a test. I also have a waterproof box I got as a gift. Built like a GoPro box but bigger. My phone is one I got from Metro PCS very cheap (~$50) so it's not like losing an $1k I-phone if it gets wet. (Cell phones btw - can survive getting wet - found one on a rainy day in the mud at the lake once and when it dried out called the owner and arranged a return.) I'm hoping though to use my old even cheaper cell phone, so if that works I don't have much to lose.

However, just by sheer random chance and mere coincidence, if you go to the Windsport Tracker web page they have waterproof bags you can buy.
