Canadian new to the area (Marietta)

Hi fellow kiters!
Great to find your website! I was always under the impression it was tybee or nothing for kiting in Georgia. Just wanted to introduce myself and find out what’s up!
I’ve been kiting since 2000. I live in Calgary Canada but spend a lot of time in the Atl area. My plan is to spend more time here in the winter which seems like your windier season? It would be great to connect with kiters in the area and gain local knowledge!

Welcome to Atlanta. Your web page is impressive. We do have some kiters that ride fairly often at Lanier (Old Federal and Vann's Tavern). The colder the weather the more likely there is wind but you might catch a day or two during the summer months. I wouldn't count on doing much snow kiting if that's one of your favorite windsports.

In addition to Tybee, kitesurfers also fly at Jekyll Island (though it is almost in Florida). Other places in the region include Destin and Tarpon Springs FL and Hilton Head, SC are some of the closest places on the coasts. I think there is a kitesurfing facebook page somewhere for more info.

Thanks Randy!

My wife and I are driving out right now just to have a look! I know there’s no wind I didn’t bring kites this trip anyway. We are also checking out marinas as we are considering bringing our boat here which would open up a lot more kiting options as we are very adept at launching from a boat. We have been to Alatoona and from what I’ve seen and looking at maps kiting from the boat there seems like the only way. Alatoona is much closer for us. It could be a good mix to have the boat there and just drive to Lanier when the conditions look good.
Cheers!

In that case, I'd suggest you drive by Galts Ferry landing (which is near Harbor Town Marina anyway.) Water is lowered there substantially every Fall and doesn't usually come back up until May. When it is low there is plenty of beach for launching kites. I've sailed my kite boat there a number of times. So take a look and see what you think. Galts is closed from December 1 to March 1 usually.

In the warm weather months there are too many people at Galts and the beach is too small.
