Starboard Formula 156

My venerable Formula board, 2003 Starboard 156 needs a home. I haven't gotten it wet in two years. Good condition. Includes chicken strap (center rear strap) Board bag and 70cm fin. DRAM construction (slightly heavier, slightly more ding proof) 262x100cm $350

Starboard's stated volume of 156 l is a lie. It's probably 1451or so 129l (Randy looked it up) because the nose is like a potato chip. The 100cm width makes it stable but don't linger on the nose while tacking. The straps are outboard so this may overwhelm someone starting out but if you are comfortable in the straps, grab a 7.5 or bigger and have fun.

Deep tuttle so could be used for foiling at your own risk. I'll grab some pics this weekend. Generic photo below.

Still have a 10.8/9/9 rig if you want something big to put on it.

I saw it. I was probably posting when you did. I had Important Stuff™ to do tonight so didn't check email until late.

Handy with a bit of epoxy and cf? Turn any old formula board into a modern foil board

https://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/Pimp-My-Ride-found-in-Windfoil-page-from-Koen-Sonck

And you are probably asking, "Where can I get an old formula board?"

Ahem.... ⬆️ Biggrin

I think you would probably want to start with a board that has already been uglyed up a bit by foiling failures.

Price lowered: $300.

Incoming gear I need to pay for. I have a 9.5 and bigger sails/complete rigs if you need something that matches the capabilities of this board. It sails well with down to a 7.5. Foil capable or fin.

Put it on Windsurfing classifieds. I got a bunch of replies on my F2 there.

I think it's time to start - I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Re: Starboard Formula 156

Finally had a free day. Scraped off the pads - probably won't reuse but nice to have patterns. Then removed graphics and non-skid. Graphics are basically a big vinyl bumper sticker. Years of riding in hot cars made it brittle and left lots of glue. It took me a while to figue out the easy way to remove them: score with razor, peel and then use denatured alcohol on the adhesive. If you are wondering why all those high end boards have that "half-painted" look is because the stock paint on these boards is very thicik. I sanded a long time with 80 grit and a palm sander and barely got down to the glass.

A few pics including an easter egg- the serial number under a foot pad.

Re: Starboard Formula 156

Update for Randy. A few pics of where I am. Next, I start glassing and adding sandwich material to the rails and then building "wings" - extensions of the deck for better upwind performance. It's what gives race foil boards the door like appearance. The nose looks a bit better in person - the pic makes the corners pretty angular but it's still going to be pretty door-like a la Patrik. btw, pour foam is fun to play with. Biggrin

That is an ambitious project! You need to make a video of what you are doing and play heavy metal rock in the background.

I'm not that cool. I'm using poor quality security cam video and going to set it to easy listening music.

Re: Starboard Formula 156

Maybe you should try something like this. Just scoop out the extra stuff. Kind of like merging formula with the long skinny pre-no nose boards...

Those look cool are but are virtually unrideable. Somewhere, there's a video of Kiran Badloe riding a Starboard version and if he touched down at speed he blew up. Besides, the big nose on race boards these days is to help make the tack as quick as possible. Some guys are planing through their tacks.
