New Windsurf/Foilboard from Slingshot

Brian responded to my request for a light-wind board that can be both foiled and windsurfed with this photo. He got the board in just as I was leaving the OBX for Atlanta, so I didn't get to sail it.

"Take a look at this pic of me foiling on the Slingshot Flyer 280, this may be right up your alley. Essentially it is a longboard windsurfer that you can foil as well and just paddle around as a SUP. In this picture we are using it with the 18” mast for the shallow waters behind the shop. We were using a 4.7m 3-batten wave sail in 15-20mph and were well powered up. The Flyer is not cheap…$2400."

Barrett, your JP SLW will do both. If you are concerned about the box, Alex M added a few liters to my board and it's killer for both fin and foil. And, it's cheaper than the Slingshot

Quote:
Reinforced turtle box ( Foil ready )

multiple foot straps positions

Reinforced with flat carbon stringers

Compact shape

Construction :

Glass $ 1899

Glass / Carbon $ 2099

Full Carbon $ 2299

I have the Glass/Carbon and it's plenty light. Shipping is maybe $150?

It does take some time to arrive, however...

That is the board Andy Brandt uses for foiling (he was flying around the Canadian Hole for a few days when we were there). It definitely dispels the notion that good foil board has to wider than it is long.

I wonder where you got that idea? Biggrin

Wyatt Miller of Slingshot on the Wizard 103 - or the board that you pay full retail but the nose is optional. (Seriously, the 125 is only $100 bucks more) Lol

Edit: Facebook vid wouldn't embed so I had to go with a pic

Here's the vid if it shows up

Texted with Trina at Slingshot today.
She is going to try and get some videos of Andy with 280 posted.
To say that the 280 Flyer w/84 Infinity can go upwind and upwind fast is an understatement .

I bet the JP SLW would make a great light wind convertible board. I came really close to buying one instead of the JP 135 foil
but the SLW wasn't on closeout and I'm a tightwad.

Specs for the 280
Length Width Thickness Volume
11'6" 28" 6 4/5" 280L

I can't find the weight of the 280 on the Slingshot website or elsewhere. This is one big board though - esp. the thickness.

Also - some of the various sellers do have it listed for a bit less - $2200.

Re: New Windsurf/Foilboard from Slingshot

btw, while I have my preferences, if this is the board that gets either Nitro or Barrett on a foil

I LOVE IT.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out if I have three kidneys. I've already sold 2 to buy foils so if I have a third, I can sell it for a new Tillo. I think this is how it works anyway...

Depending on your circumstances maybe these guys can help. Big upside - no body parts surrendered.

Or maybe even combine a new foil with a trip to the Hawaii.

Can confirm. I'm on a facebook group "Grow your own organic kidneys". Lots of good advice and tips on growing kidneys. #doitforthefoil

This is the board that I "think" that I want. Without the opportunity to demo though, the idea of dropping that kind of $ on top of buying a foil is very hard to stomach. As a dedicated longboarder (and shortboarder), the main appeal of this is not so much the experience as such but rather the versatility and capability over a wide range of light wind conditions. Barring the unforeseen, I guess I'll proceed with my plans to build something similar. BTW, Randy, the weight listed, if you can trust it, is 30 lb.

Seems reasonable. The old carbon Equipes were 28ish. I think you can add a couple of pounds to this though for all the padding you'll need to keep the boom from cracking off the front half.

Just looking at the specs and the pics it seems a bit like a typical vintage funboard (probably wider) or maybe a recent SUP like the Bic 11'6" I used to own. There is a DIY foil kit for $130. I don't think that includes epoxy or fiberglass though.

Re: New Windsurf/Foilboard from Slingshot

Randy, I'm not sure the Clearwater kit, unmodified, is up to the demands of windfoiling. We put a lot more stress on the foils and masts than other types of foiling. When the NP Pinkies were first introduced, they had problems with big guys bending the masts. The same has happened with people trying to repurpose kite foils for windfoiling. Since we are also using bigger wings, the loads on the fuselage and wings are greater.

Then add the time and materials and a used Slingshot becomes more viable (or, shudder, something "directly sourced from overseas"). You can build your own but I'd probably look at the Rob Rock videos, instead, or use his methods on the clearwater kit. He uses a fair amount of CF if I recall.

I'm all for DIY, though. Just would hate for someone to spend a lot of time to end up with fiberglass kindling.

Starboard uses three bolts verticall and two horizontally to hold the mast socketed into the fuse. Compared to this from the Clearwater kit (plus a bunch of glass)

Rob Rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uIWdEI1f2Y btw, flat wings work just fine, no need to add wingtips

Re: New Windsurf/Foilboard from Slingshot

Rob Rock kind of glosses over the putting the profile shape into the wing which seems extremely difficult (and probably important to get at least close) so the Clearwater wings (<$40) might be worth a look even if everything else isn't. Don't know the dimensions of their wing but Rock's did look rather small to me. I did contact them once about use of their foil kits on windsurfers and he did indicate it had been done. I'm more interested in DIY stuff that can be done on a sewing machine......

I guess my fundamental question about the 280 Flyer is what is so different about this that makes it cost so much more than a sort of standard 11'6" windsurf longboard or SUP? (And I have no idea if anyone actually makes longboards anymore or what they cost.)

Re: New Windsurf/Foilboard from Slingshot

Just some basic info learned the expensive way.

I bought a 2017 110L Fanatic Skate about this time two years ago $1750... ( a good board but not a good board for my ability or Lake Lanier)

I picked up my Slingshot Wizard 150 ($1200 NB Windsurfing) last Saturday.

I have put more hours on the Wizard the last five days than I have put on the Skate since I have owned it......and I hope to put 2 or 3 hours on it this Friday

Now as for the Flyer 280 I do not know how much of what Nitro and I saw Andy Brandt do was the board, the Infinity 84 wing or just the skills that Andy has or a combination thereof.

Andy did tell me that me liked the board so much that he bought it.

The 84 wing has a lot of great reviews. I hope to buy one when money permits.

I guess my point is.
I am enjoying windsurfing more and more often since I started foiling and even though it has been expensive I am getting a greater return on my money.

I'm going to guess that the 280 is epoxy sandwich as where a SUP is probably like surfboard construction, a layer or two of glass over foam. Not only are there more materials involved (PVC foam for the sandwich and extra layers of glass/carbon) but it's much more labor intensive. A sandwich requires 2 to 4 more vacuum bagging steps plus the labor of installing fin box, mast box, etc. You can build a SUP or surfboard without even using a vacuum pump.

Yes, Starboard, Kona and Exocet still make raceboards (plus there's the new Windsurfer LT which is a bit heavier). https://www.nbwindsurfing.com/shop/Windsurf/Windsurf-Boards/Long-Boards.htm

Used Starboard Phantom $2900 (new $3200) Kona CarbOne $2600

Sandy Point has the Exocet RS 380 for $3400
