Meanwhile in the Outer Banks

Meanwhile in the Outer Banks the wind is SW 24, G 31, sunny & temp in the upper 70's. We haven't worn wetsuits for a while. I'm in taking a break, so here are some photos from our trip. We love coming & have reserved next Spring for the same 3 weeks.

Photos: Brian on 4.7m sail in front of house, 150L foil board I rented that is too large for existing wind, Our week 3 group at dinner.

For all those who go in early spring and late fall when it's cold - this is why you shouldn't. May and early June always rock. When that SW cranks up, it's wonderful.

Great pics, Barrett. Found a place for that board in your van?

That picture of the board makes me think:

1.) I should move my footstraps inward (all 4 of them.)
2,) My wing is much further back than this one.
3.) Maybe I should just start by cutting the tail off of my board and putting on a stick on mast plate.

Does your board have inboard strap inserts? I didn't notice any.
Your wing isn't that far back - look where the back straps are on this board - right beside the fin box.
You can do a stick on but leave the tail (seriously).
Someone I know has just purchased the '18 version of this board. It's not that expensive as boards go.

I would have to install the strap inserts. Not that hard, but I lack inserts. I've made them before out of dowel rods. Not a perfect solution but it does work. Maybe just forget about footstrap position for now.

I'll forget about cutting off the tail too. This thing doesn't have much volume to spar anyway.

The stick on mount seems the most logical and easiest and not that expensive. I already have the adapter that (in theory) will allow me to mount my mast on that kind of mount. Looks like I would need the ridge mount.* To get my foot anywhere behind the foil-wing it pretty much as to be between the front and back mounting screws. Even that with vigorous pumping is not resulting in a trip skyward.

Then again, perhaps I am coming up with an engineering solution to a lack of skill, wind and practice problem.......

* after review - not clear that the foil mount is recommended for windsurf. I'm contacting them to find out.

In response to: "Found a place for that board in your van?"

Yesterday morning the wind was down and I got a chance to sail the Slingshot 150 Levitator. I used a 6.0 meter sail - roughly equivalent to an 8.5 meter on a non-foil board. The Slingshot 150 was obviously easier to get on a plane and far easier to foil in a light wind than the Slingshot I rented last week. Importantly for me, the board was far less likely to nosedive when the foil lost lift. Unfortunately for me, this is a dedicated foil board. I'd really like one large board that I can both windsurf and foil, so I'm not bringing the board home in my van.

It was fun to foil, but stringy, green weeds suddenly appeared in the last couple of days and they foul the foil. At least with my 122 liter windsurfing board, I can do a chop hop and shake them off my fin. I can avoid them completely with a weed fin.

The photo of the bottom side of the board shows the robust attachment with four large Phillips-head screws.
