Naish Wingsurfer

Now you don't just need a wing under your board, you need to carry one with you. Robby says it easy, He's an expert on what's easy right. I mean if old Robby can do it probably I could too right. Summer 2019, or I probably would already have ordered one.

For those who can't figure out what sport they want to do: kitefoil, windfoil or whatever.

Lots of possibilities - skateboards, roller blades, ice skates, ATB, maybe my buggy and kiteboat (or according Robby SUP also.) One thing - seems like you need a fairly big board because a kiteboard sized board seems like it would be impossible to use unless it can be water started, But then again, Robby says it is easy. Lol

I've seen pictures something like it from Jeff Logosz a while and. I also found this video apparently showing a prototype.

I think this is more promising than Kai Lenny's wingsuit. Even he seems to agree.

BTW - DuTone also has one in the works and I think there is one more as well. Interesting that they all claim theirs is different- yet the all look pretty much alike.

An interesting article about the slingshot model.

https://www.surfertoday.com/kiteboarding/the-second-life-of-the-slingwing?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+surfertoday%2Fkiteboarding+%28Kiteboarding+News+%7C+SurferToday.com%29

After reading various threads on other boards I've learned Kai Lenny is on the Ozone model, and that Ken WInner designed the North/Dutone model. So far no one outside the riders for the various manufacturers and copycats have tried one. But there is lot of speculation and interest. I guess this will go with windsurfing as a sport invented by many......Assuming it catches on at all.

Re: Naish Wingsurfer

Scuttlebutt I've read indicates that it takes a fair amount of wind to get these going - 20+ mph. Seen more as a wind assist on a foil sup/surf than a viable alternative to sail or kite at this point. We did see an inflatable sail going on Lake Garda but those are closer to a 5.0 while the hand-held wings are like 3.0-.5

OTOH, they might be fun for you putzing around on a SUP on a light, breezy summer afternoon. You can just let it float behind the board and paddle in if the wind dies.

I'll be holding on to my mast and booms for a while, it looks like. Biggrin

Re: Naish Wingsurfer

I think I've read the same things or various forums. I took another look at Robbies' video and he didn't seem to be riding in a lot of wind, but most of the other riders on the other models did seem to have pretty strong winds. Once you are foiling it (is claimed) you don't much wind to keep going. So I am getting to be more skeptical about this thing. The speculation seems to be that the be best application for this might be SUP in waves or downwinders. (Ironically - it seems the SUP crowd is least enthused). I also think it won't be as easy as Robbie and the Slingshot peeps claim. If it is only ~3m as some are guessing it is hard to see how it would work w/o a pretty good amount of wind. Not too obvious how you would waterstart it either. In the end, depends on what it costs, ease of use and how effective it is. I'm making a wild guess of something around $800 which is way too much but the ws and ks industries have never been shy. However, with 4 models coming out, there may be some good price competition.

Kai. Looks like it's absolutely cranking in the background but what do I know?

Lightwind riding on a 110 liter SUP. This guy says it is a 4 M. Not planing or foiling.

Randy, based on that video, I may have to reassess my view of these. It may be the ideal gateway drug to windsurfing and kiting as well as being it's own thing. I guess I need to edit the masthead of the website when these make their first appearances in Atlanta.

Of course, it'll be interesting to see the custody battle for these between the windsurfing and kiting communities. A bit like "The Ransom of Red Chief". Lol

Phillipe Caneri of Horue jumping. Word in France is the Duotone wings will be about 600 € which likely means about the same in freedom bucks. Likely sizes are 4 and 5m. Apparently the 5m is enough in 15-18 kts. (18-22 mph) which is good for Hatteras but that's a fair amount of wind for here. There are some differences between the Duotone and Naish so it'll be interesting how things go.

btw, that looks like the new Horue XXLW wing one of which which is sitting in my van awaiting the right opportunity.

I got them down from 800 to 600, but that's still too high. They are going to have to a lot better than that. I did have an interesting idea. Why not tie it to a SUP and invent a new sport called Windsailing or Boardsailing. Something like that. But then who would do that.

Did we miss the announcement of the arrival of your new rig?

Somebody else has one. I think they live someplace where they can afford color pixels. Lol

Re: Naish Wingsurfer

I was waiting to do my best Robbie Naish imitation and do selfies while using.

I'm kind of reserving judgement on this thing. It is not one of the models that North, Arrows or Kona is selling (though it might be the same thing.) I got it via Alibaba direct from the factory at a much lower price - so does low price mean low quality? IDK. Having said that - the product material and workmanship looks great and works better than I thought it might.

I have learned a few things which have made me a bit more skeptical about the Wingsurfer (or the like). First it is not nearly as easy as it looks to get on a SUP even with the sail (kite?) tied down. In windsurfing I am quite used to using the rig as a counter balance. Even riding an SUP you have the paddle to lean on and help with balance. Suddenly the rig weighs almost nothing (notice the one or two finger uphauls I did) and I don't really want to lean against it. For this reason tacking is pretty hard - but I've fallen on jibes as well. It probably is good for improving balance and I have gotten a lot better after a few times out. For this reason, I think maybe Joe Average SUP guy would struggle with it. For the same reasons - I suspect that holding the wing in one hand (unless there is a pretty decent amount of wind) might not be as easy as Robbie and Kai make it look. (Notice they didn't go up to their local lake and grab the first guy on a SUP or windsurf board they found to do the video.....)

Anyway - I like it for times when displacement mode sailing is the order of the day (5-10) or just for convenience sake. The speed you get is not very fast and it seems to depend mainly on the board - my Starboard with the center fin is noticeably quicker than my inflato SUP (w/o a center fin.) The sail is claimed to be 4.2 M but it looks a little bigger when laid on top of my 4.4 NP sail. It seems to move along pretty well even in very light wind though.

Well, I've seen someone foil on that kind of rig so the expectations for you are high.

Re: Naish Wingsurfer

Everybody is getting into the act now. Gene, when is Wingsense coming out with its wingsurfer?

BTW - their size range is 3,4 and 5M. So that kind of answers that question. Prices are listed as $ - US I guess. 600-850 depending on size.

Things are progressing quickly. Duotone seems to be gaining traction. I wonder if they are tweaking the design with all these riders using it now?

Horue announces a dedicated board available in June.
