Re: Fort 2 Battery Race

I just found out about this today from someone in Charleston. If anyone is interested, get in touch with me.

Re: Fort 2 Battery Race

I think the record is by Zach Marks on a foiling kite– 7 minutes to do the 4 miles. Is that 34 mph? Shok

Stanger, Olivier, LongboardDude (Jeff Olson) and I did this a few years ago on Longboreds and it was really fun. The wind was on the light side (~15-ish), but Stanger was able to plane all the way and beat us and all the beach cats. I finished after a sporty Nacra but in front of a Hobie 18 and other cats. All the Moths and most of the kites on twin tips beat us. The start was pretty frisky... lots of fast boats and voodoo chop near the fort made it interesting. JIYC is a cool spot and a good launch for a doable upwind leg to Fort Sumter. The big dog kiters rig big and launch from Mt Pleasant to go just one way.

Unfortunately, this year it conflicts with the Smith regatta at Shell Point.

Again, if anyone is interested, an acquaintance in Charleston is offering support via his boat/tender. Hit me up if you need more info. Foildood would love to do this if Shell Point didn't conflict.

I'd love to do it too if I wasn't going to JIYC a few weeks later to help out with the Special Olympics Regatta. It looks like a blast!
Maybe next year we should get a group and go, have a race within the race.

Pretty cool replay with a jaunty soundtrack. Dramatic finish. You don't really get a sense of speed until near the end when you see a media/chase boat. Don't miss the crash at 6:00 Shok

Amazing video, great comeback and in the running for worst soundtrack of 2019. Instrumental version of Mr. Sandman? Really?

Anyway, those foil kites just walked away from everything else. Yes, that crash was epic. Watching the "Barney Rubble" was funny. The crash at the finale was big, too. Going full blast and blowing up. Only way to race... Biggrin

Tide Charts show they were racing on an ebb tide, The first guy that fell probably lost 20 places by the time he got back up. It's like a 7ft swing between high and low tide.
I say this every year but we should get a group up and go next year. James Island campground is really nice.

Windfoil report from Charleston: Chucktown local, David B., reports that while he was DFL, he wasn't DNF like last year. Wind was light 10 kts at the start but he took advantage of a good puff to ride all the way to the finish. He was riding a Horue board/foil (I'm assuming XLW) and 7.5.

Thanks Webguy!
I had a blast and I am doing it next year for sure! I can help ya'll here in Charleston with logistics, support boat and even lodging. I will be reaching out again before next event to encourage every one to come. I would love to see the windsurfers back in this event! If we get enough windfoils perhaps we can even get a start in Foilmania. The UFO's (a new recreational foiling cat) had a start this year.
