Thursday 4 / 11 afternoon

Hope to sail at Vanns around 3 or 4 Thursday.
The water has warmed up significantly and it should be a warm fun filled day

Is someone's mom bringing cookies and cupcakes? If it matters, I love chocolate chip and lots of icing on the cupcakes.

Should be a good one. See you boys and girls there.

Mind the fire ants there. My bites from last week are just starting to heal.

Is it shorty weather yet? T think I might try Websters Ferry at Red Top Mtn on Allatoona. SE wind is lines up with a 1.5 mile fetch. -Bill

Depends if you fall in. A couple of people have gone without recently (Langdon, Mauricio) and the kite guys have been doing shortys for a couple of weeks at least.

Since I have to start out immersed to my chest - I take the conservative route.

If it's a good spot, give us a report so we can add it to the wiki. Photos always appreciated.

Good turnout at Vanns.
Parking lot was full of windsurfers, windfoilers and kiters.
Lots of foiling going on.
Water and air was warm enough that I did not use a wetsuit.
Fun day

It wasn't my imagination. Gilmer reported 9 gusting to 26 this afternoon. Sometimes it was a blast, sometimes I was holding on for dear life.

Big day at Vanns. Hope I don't leave anyone out.
Gene, Alejandro, Rogier, Langdon, Chris V, Chris P., Dave D., Eric, Matt, Al, David roughly in the order in which people showed up.

Really chill and friendly atmosphere. I love it. The more the merrier. Biggrin

Re: Thursday 4 / 11 afternoon

Webster’s Ferry on Allatoona looks like a winner. One of the better sessions I’ve had on Lake Allatoona. I was on my Phoenix 320 with a 6.5 and sailed from 2:30-4:30. While the wind would wax and wane, it was filled in and not particularly gusty. I could plane and jibe back and forth, upwind/downwind for long periods. Water was flat and chop non-existent. I’m hoping to try this on NW winds since the lake is lined up NW/SE.

The launch is perfect side shore for SE/NW winds. To the SE the lake opens up to a wide area right in front of the Allatoona Yacht Club. It also opens up to the NW, but not as big. The launch is located in Red Top Mountain State Park, so your COE pass won’t work. It’s $5.00 daily (self-pay envelopes at the entrance) or $50.00 for an annual pass. On the bright side, there’s no picnic area there so it might be less crowded than Galt’s Ferry.

Attached some pics showing views to the left and right of the launch and the rigging/parking area. -Bill H.

Re: Thursday 4 / 11 afternoon

Thanks Bill,

I am going to have to give that place a try. Looks very good for SE probably much better than Galts. NW may be a little less favorable than Galts.

According to Google Maps it is only a minute longer to get there (than Galts) if you are going North on I-75 and take Glades road. There seems to be a much closer exit on further up on I-75 (Red Top Mtn Rd). Can you think of any reason why that is not a better exit?

Seems like Exit 285 Red Top Mountain Road would be the best route coming up I-75.

FWIW, the Phoenix has a dagger board which gives me a lot more confidence exploring new places. I sailed about a half mile from launch in either direction. There's kind of a gap to the right that might help funnel and concentrate NW winds. Monday looks like it might be good for trying that theory out. -Bill H.

Thanks Bill,

I also enjoy trying new spots. You never know when you might need one. NW looks ok to me and you might get some tunnelling type effect. If there is much West in it, seems it would be a problem. Of course, W at Galts is often not that great either. $5 to find out is a drawback but sometimes at places where you have to pay they will let you take a look around first.
