Day One Windfoiling

Slingshot windsurf brand manager Wyatt Miller challenges two of his Slingshot kitefoiling colleagues who have never windsurfed to windfoil in a day.

Hilarity and success ensue. Props to these guys for making a go of it.

That board is too little for learning... speaking of which– if you want to borrow my already-broken-but-now-sorta-fixed-up formula board for learning to foil, come and get it! This thing made a huge difference for me. Your turn!

I thought my board was supposed to be more bulletproof being made for kids. And as you know, I don't mind wrecking boards.......

I thought you might want to preserve yours for a bit and do your first catapults on the Mistral. Biggrin

But, it sounds like you have gone all in on this project. Carry on... Biggrin

Well,

Now as it turns out the Formula 136 has bulletholes. Or some kind of holes because it has sprung a leak(s) after sailing today at Tidwell. So if no one else signed up for the Mistral I will be happy to.

Is it from the side holes where those side fins went?

As of this afternoon, the board was available.

Side fins? Don't recall that. There were side fins on the Go. (In fact, I still have them)

I have the board on its rack flat against the wall and the leak is on the bottom, so I'm not sure exactly where the leaks are but they are on the rails around the middle of the board and seems to be 2 or more a ways apart. I noticed the dripping an hour or so after I put it up. I'll move it to the basement today and see what's going on.

Still waiting on the foil nose so not in a rush on Chris' board.

yep, those are the side fin bolt/screw holes. I filled them with something innocuous. You can open the holes and see if it gets worse/better.

Re: Day One Windfoiling

I remember you mentioning that now. One of the spots with water coming out was at that location, but there were a couple others ~1 foot or so away. I weighed the board this morning and it comes in at 26.5. The ISAF tech sheet for the board (still being used in Formula Experience class) is 24.7 which is probably more realistic than anything on the Starboard web page. So it isn't too far off and and may improve in a day or two as more water evaporate - the leaking has stopped. So there isn't all that much water in there. There is also the usual variance in board weights. I could try to repair myself or maybe take it to a shop in OBX next time I go (if there is still anyone doing board repair up there.)

The damage is forward of the footstraps so not a particularly important area on the board. I'm tempted just put a thin layer of ding stick on it using the method you've seen on the Bic. Not lovely but does the job. The alternative is a lot of sanding and glassing and more sanding and fairing. I suppose sharper rails are helpful for releasing onto a plane, but I'll be 3 three feet up in the so it won't matter. Lol (If that ever actually happens) And it certainly won't matter in my subsequent (and likely immediate) "fall from grace."

Re: Day One Windfoiling

Thanks for the offer, I'll give it some thought.

It now looks like the leaking is forward of the side fin plug so that part is ok. Is suspect water was just draining down to that spot from the holes further forward on the rails.
