Tillo alum/G10 foils coming

Alex Morales of Tillo has some new foils in the pipeline. G10 wings/mast and alum fuselage and Carbon wings/mast and alum fuselage.

Edit: He's also been busy cranking out foil boards - 7 boards in 6 weeks.

Is he working on a low wind or beginner wing as well?

Yes and I don't know. He's in Miami and races- a low wind wing is given. I think I've seen him mention doing wings as wide as 90cm which probably equates to a 1000cm2 -ish wing.

"Beginner" wings tend to be thicker - ie ride slower and ride reasonably in low/med winds. The trend to longer fuselages means a lot of performance foils are as stable as a beginner wing but offer more performance as you climb the learning curve. Foils like the AFS 85, Taaroa Noa, Fanatic, Starboard Alus, etc are noted to be pretty beginner friendly by GlissAttitude.

Helping the novice to progress is a way to give quick satisfaction, to allow the least-skilled to access the flight in a reasonable time, and ultimately to give pleasure without galley. In this ranking, we understand the entire learning phase and not just the first flight. Doc speaks of the ease of making his first 'jump', even before controlling anything, but also the ease of making his first long flights stabilized .. which implies progressiveness and stability.

Alex just told me that in the video above, he's on an 8.4 and one of his prototype alu/G10 foils in 6 mph wind. Shok

Edit: More foiling from the Wed night races

Tillo (Alex Morales): $250 for full day private lesson includes equipment in warm, breezy Miami.

For contrast: Vail charges $212 (w/ advanced booking) for an intermediate group ski lesson. Does not include equipment or lift ticket. Does include the chance of hypothermia.

Coming soon to a lake near you Biggrin

Foil ready 228 x 78 x 120l

I've also got lots of pics of his new foil if anyone is curious. I assume you'll see them on his instagram very soon. Very competitive price vs Starboard race foils and I imagine blistering in light wind.

Why is it that the wing and tail shapes look pretty flat and rectangular? Other foils seem to have more elliptical shape in the wing and some anhedral or dihedral? His also look like g-10 v. carbon or alloy I guess.

Re: Tillo alum/G10 foils coming

Machined out of G10. There is some difference of opinion in the foil community whether wings really need to have an/dihedral. Part of the value of swept tips on the stab or wing is for yaw stability. My Horue XLW and LW has neither (only their smallest wing has some anhedral) and yaw isn't a big issue. The Starboard tracks a bit better but its mast is much wider than the Horue mostly for reasons of stiffness. As well, the shape of the fuselage acts naturally as a "fin". It's interesting that his previous iterations had a vertical fin and he left if off either for cost (machining) or performance reasons. I haven't asked him about it.

Another reason wings have turned tips is from their kiting background -safety - where it's much easier to end up on the same side of the board as the foil. Lastly, downturned tips are less likely to punch through the surface at high angles of heel common to both kite racing and (less) windsurf racing. Most rec windfoils, especially, are ridden vertically.

Foils that are relatively flat include Sroka, Manta, Zeeko and NP pink alus which are all known to be relatively easy to ride.

Alpinefoils have some shape but interestingly, their objective is to self-feather at higher speeds, lower angles of atttack.

Lastly, at least one of the latest generations of race foils/wings, the Taaora Sword, has a bit of anhedral but flatten out again at the tips.

If it's something that really has you curious, email Alex - he tends to be good about answering stuff.

Officially available $1299 One will be available locally for comparison. It'll be interesting comparing it to the Starboard GT_R, etc.

I don't think those will work. They look too soft. Probably absorb water like crazy and sink.
