Government shutdown question

Do I remember correctly that if the Government shuts down so do the Corp of Engineer parks?

This is what happened last time: https://windsportatlanta.com/gallery/album/486/item?page=21

Lanier parks are under the Army rather than the National Parks so I'm not sure that the policy will apply (it didn't last time). Nothing yet on the Corps Lake Lanier Facebook page.

Re: Government shutdown question

The good news is (according to CNBC.com) NWS will still be doing weather forecasts. So even if you can't do windsport, at least you will know in advance which days you are getting screwed out of.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/21/what-happens-if-government-shuts-down.html

"Department closures

Nine federal departments will be shuttered if the government shuts down this weekend. They are:

Department of the Treasury
Department of Agriculture
Homeland Security Department
Department of the Interior
Department of State
Department of Housing and Urban Development
Department of Transportation
Department of Commerce
Department of Justice

“Dozens” of U.S. agencies will also close down during the shutdown, according to the report from the Senate Democrats. Those closures could lead non-federal employees to feel the impact of the shutdown, as well."

Now - over half the people working in those departments will still be working - without pay for a while.

"More than 420,000 federal employees across numerous agencies will continue to work even if the government shuts down. They just won’t get paid for it immediately."

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.

And by the way, all Departments of Wind will also be shut.

Re: Government shutdown question

When Van Pugh was officially closed (orange cones) during the last shut down, it was still open (orange cones quickly moved). I do not remember if they locked the rest rooms but they did quit picking up the trash. People continued to use the park and when the trash cans were full, they just piled trash up around the cans. So, everyone should bring a trash bag with them and help to keep the trash from piling up. There's a Hall County dumpster behind the fire department you drive by on Gaines Ferry Rd. .I did try to pick up the trash the last time, not because I'm a good guy or anything, but because I was afraid if it got any worst, they would put up real barriers to close the park.

I wonder if people are expected to pay the credit card machine during the shut down.

Re: Government shutdown question

The way the forecast looks it seems moot whether the parks are open or not.

Van Pugh report, Monday 12/24, 2:20.

Open as usual, no signs or anything, a few boaters and picnickers, didn't check the to see if the rest rooms were open as I didn't need to rest.

Re: Government shutdown question

GFS Model output (main NWS forecast model) has become less accurate during the shutdown: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2019/01/07/national-weather-service-is-open-your-forecast-is-worse-because-shutdown/

Quote:
Suru Saha, a union steward at the Environmental Modeling Center in College Park, Md., said the main impact has been on the National Weather Service’s new global forecast model, which was scheduled to go live in February but will surely be delayed because of the shutdown.

But in the meantime, the current Global Forecast System — or the GFS — the United States' premier weather model, is running poorly, and there’s no one on duty to fix it.

“There was a dropout in the scores for all of the systems” on Dec. 25, Saha said of the scoring system used to rank how the forecast models are performing. “All of the models recovered, except for the GFS, which is still running at the bottom of the pack.” Not only does that mean the day-to-day weather forecast is worse, she said, it is also a national security risk.

Saha thinks it has to do with the data format. The model brings in data from all over the world, from dozens of different countries that are now standardizing the format to adhere to new regulations. The Environmental Modeling Center was working to adjust for the new formats when the shutdown started. Saha said that even though the Weather Service is getting the data, the GFS doesn’t recognize the format, so it can’t use it. And a model forecast is only as good as its input data.

“Once the GFS scores start to go bad, it impacts everything,” Saha said. Transportation, the energy sector, national security, agriculture, the stock market, extreme weather. There are about 50 full-time federal employees at EMC and 150 contractors. Only one person is working during the shutdown, she said — a manager who does not work on data or the models.
