Be careful where you are sailing - lest you become a target

So - bow and arrow deer hunting season at Lake Lanier is upon us. I guess duck hunting season is not the only time of year we need to watch where we are going.

My first suggestion is to avoid using any inflatable windsurf boards. Pretty sure no inflatable would be a match for any arrow that can kill a deer. (Nothing against arrows - my car can kill a deer too - but using it is as a weapon is not considered as sporting as killing a deer with an arrow. I guess that's because deer literally line up to be run over by cars taking the fun of the chase out of it.)

Second, figure out where this is going on and avoid it. Third avoid wearing any of those cute holiday antlers when you are out sailing on Lanier.

"The Islands Deer Hunt

The Islands Deer Hunt at Lake Lanier is an archery-only hunt held on 18 specified islands and 3 peninsulas. The 21 hunting areas range in size from 10 acres to 149 acres for a total of 1,100 acres.

This year’s hunts are scheduled for Nov. 8-11; Nov. 22-25; and Dec. 6-9.

Hunting areas are typically accessible by boat only. The limit is one deer per day, per hunter. Hunters must record all deer harvested through the Georgia Game Check. State bag limits and harvest restrictions apply. The Lake Lanier Islands Resort area is not included in this hunt.

For this hunt, the lake is divided into four zones. Hunters are assigned one of the above hunting dates and a specific hunting zone. Hunters are allowed to bring one hunting partner with them during their designated hunt. A total of 60 hunters are selected; 5 hunters for each zone for each four-day hunt. If each hunter takes a partner there is a total of 120 potential hunters. Selected hunters are required to pay a $20 fee to obtain the permit. Some statistics from the previous years are listed in the table below.

The Buford Dam Hunt

The Buford Dam Hunt is an archery-only hunt held on 600 acres of land around the Lake Lanier Project Management Office and Buford Dam and one 32 acre out-parcel at Burton Mill Park.

This year’s hunt is scheduled for Nov. 13-15 with a mandatory pre-hunt safety meeting for all hunters on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The limit is two deer, only one may be antlered. Hunters must bring all deer harvested to a check station where the deer will be weighed and aged. The GA DNR will also tag each deer harvested so hunters are not required to record them on their GA DNR deer harvest record.

For this hunt, the land is divided into 14 compartments. Hunters are assigned a specific hunting compartment. Hunters are allowed to bring one hunting partner with them during their hunt. A total of 14 hunters are selected (1 hunter per compartment). If each hunter takes a partner there is a total of 28 potential hunters. Selected hunters are required to pay a $20 fee to obtain the permit. Statistics from previous years are available in the table below."

Here are a bunch of maps which I can't figure out but they show where hunting is allowed.

Most of the areas seem to be around Buford Dam except for one track which is Chestnut Ridge (downwind of VP on a west). If you break down, drift that way, and hear banjo music, you are probably going to have a bad day. Lol

The part I found interesting was that many of the hunting spots are on small islands that require a boat to get there. Do they boat the deer in for this like stocking the fish in the lake? Is this a punishment for deer picked up loitering along the roadsides? Sort of like sentencing them to Devil's Island? We have some deer in our neighborhood - maybe we could report them and get them sent there.

We have around a dozen deer that roam around Sunrise Cove Marina, Deer can swim so I could see how a few might end up on an island. Most hunters are very aware of what is downrange off what we are shooting at so y'all really don't have much to worry about but if you are then just wait until Jan 14th to sail and then you wont have to worry about it anymore....or wear just wear an orange wetsuit!

Deer show up in my yard from time to time, but never stick around so the hunting would be poor. Anybody who would like to hunt the squirrels in my yard would be more than welcome with any weapon they choose.

Jim Crow Rd, LLSC and Old Fed are thick with deer right now. I’ve seen lots of deer tracks on Three Sisters Island years ago. That’s one of the hunt areas and definitely within an arrow shot of the water we sail. Shok
Hard to imagine deer being good swimmers but I know they do it a lot.

You guys worry about the silliest stuff. Here we are in the middle of a world crisis and all you can think of is deer. Like, when was the last time a deer jumped out in front of your board when you had a 4.0 rigged? Yea! Tell me that. And, what was your deductable?

Don't worry, the crisis is over. The alien probe was outed by 2 Harvard scientists, and is now heading back to it's home planet.
