SATURDAY 9/15 VP Live report

Steady breaze. Has increased a little since 9:30.

Parking lot already has many cars toward the beach area setting up some small tents ( I would be here before lunch )

Beautiful day
I am rigged and headed out.

According to the forecast the wind will arrive in 5 min. Waiting with great anticipation for the trees to start moving.

Solid 4.5 day over here in Augusta. The rain held off till late, so great day all around.

Nice!

I was thinking that Augusta may be the call for today.

Lake Lanier was just too far out, all we got was some teaser forecast and some clouds.

Foiled for half an hour (barely). At least Music Midtown was fun and dry.

Foiled for about half of half an hour. For about half that time, I had exactly the right size sail. Shok

sailed a 5.0 on Lake Keowee in SC yesterday (first time windsurfing that lake, first time with a sail that small). would go from under-powered to over, and back again, several times within 10 minute spans. BUT....for about 20 beautiful minutes, everything was juuuuust right (including, magically, the cleanest and best organized 2.5 foot 'swells' I've ever sailed on a lake!). man that was fun.

Great to see the non-Lanier reports. Keep those cards and letters coming, folks! zzholt, does Keowee often get an organized swell like that? Also, if you could, let us know from where you launched so we can add it to the wiki.

Nitro, apparently AshevilleJanes was on Clarks Hill, too. Trying to get more details on it.

These LLSC racers guys are more dedicated than us I guess.

Gene & Ed catching dying wind from Hurricane Florence at the end of the day. It was a lot of waiting around for the wind to come in, but I had two good 1/2 hour sessions between light showers. Thanks to Langdon for sharing piping hot pizza while we reminisced about windier days.

Re: SATURDAY 9/15 VP Live report

webguy - re Keowee windsurfing: I launched from South Cove County Park. I can't really say it's a great launch spot, UNLESS you might be camping there. The campground portion of the park is on a peninsula offering better access to the more open water and has lots of nice grass for rigging. The day users must resort to launching from the swimming area, making for a challenging, fluky cove to fight out of. As for that "organized swell".... I just don't know as I've only ever sailed on Keowee a few times and in light winds. Wind yesterday was from the NE, giving it a clean 2.5 mile fetch down to the open water I finally managed to work myself upwind to enjoy. I usually sail Hartwell launching from Broyles Rec. Area or Green Pond. And while that part of Hartwell is probably more open than Keowee, perhaps it's the islands, or converging channels, that seem to make for more confused waves. Or....maybe it was just the magic of ~ 30 kt (?) winds yesterday. Can't say I've sailed wind quite that strong on Hartwell before. (I DID meet another windsurfer out on Keowee yesterday who lives right there on the water. I think his name was Steve. He mentioned he often races down there with you guys in your fall windsurfing regatta. Maybe someone knows him? )

Thanks! wiki page added: https://windsportatlanta.com/wiki/Lake_Keowee

also amended Hartwell: https://windsportatlanta.com/wiki/Hartwell_Lake

btw, if anyone knows of decent access on the east side (facing westerlies), let me know. There is a road that runs along the lake but they really don't want you to park there. There's either a guardrail on both sides or very clear NO PARKING signs.

P.S. Took my wife there when we were dating to crew for me on a dinghy for a regatta. Capsized on some silly downwind thing - fortunately, the weather was warm - and then took her to meet my parents in Charlotte. She never crewed for me again (I started windsurfing anyway) but she did marry me.
