I just talked with Chris. He suggests the Sailing Club for this Friday afternoon. Count me in.

Nice to know why a film crew was hanging out near Van Pugh for months. Sorry I missed seeing Laura Linney.

Whitecaps at LLSC and wind shadow from old fed. Direction might be better at vp, but I’m staying here.

Re: Longest Flyday of the year

Friday was fun at the LLSC but the breeze backed off a bit on us. We got to watch from the porch the squall come in - it was a lot more fun than being on the water. Wind meter there picked up 30+ gusts.

Today, Ed and I took a punt and sailed at Van Pugh. Park was empty due to World Cup. Plenty of parking. We bobbed around for about an hour until the wind kicked in from a big cell in N. GA. We had a grand time until we were both chased off the water with gusts in the low 20s. And, then, just like that, it turned off which made rolling up the sails that much easier.

Decided to drop in the water and tug on the outhaul and a concerned boater came over to help.
"Do you need help?"
"I'm fine, just adjusting something."
"Are you sure?"

Where are these nice people in December? Wink

Re: Longest Flyday of the year

I have only ever been asked if I needed help once while windsurfing - and it was in a summer month. I didn't - I was just waiting for some wind to waterstart. However, I remember one time in one of the cold weather months when I was at Tidwell. It was very gray, fairly windy and nasty. I was on the boat ramp getting ready to launch and a lady comes up to me and say "What are you - crazy or something?" So in answer to your question - the concerned nice people aren't at the lake in December.....About one shows up every ten years to offer a windsurfer help (when they don't need it.)

I sailed today 5.0 on my Windsup at Little Ridge. There was a bit of wind for a while, then I ran to shore thinking a t-storm was approaching - there wasn't one so I went back out and after a bit of pleasant sailing, the wind croaked on me. After I drifted back in and rolled up my sail the wind came back of course......

What would have given her that impression? Biggrin

Like the old joke: Why did it take three Boy Scouts to help the old lady cross the road? Because, she didn't want to cross the road.

Re: Longest Flyday of the year

Pat Park and I got nothing at Old Fed today. Dave D. and Alejo got the early shift and kited. They were coming out of the water as Pat and I arrived. Alejo was flying a 17 and a slingshot foil. Interestingly, he said that as long as the kite could stay in the air, he could get the foil going. That's a game changer for local kiters.

My two mistakes were 1) sleeping in after getting worn out at VP yesterday and 2) trying to go back there today. No "local" teams were playing in the WC today and the parking lot showed it. Oh well, foiled Wed, Fri and Saturday. Not bad for the summer and no tropical weather. I'm a happy camper.

Re: Longest Flyday of the year

I've now completed my first double hat trick (6 days in row) of Windsport outside of the outer banks. 5/6 of it within a few miles of home. Pictures, videos or more likely cartoons to follow.

Great pics! Keep them coming! Hopefully, we'll get some good ones from Bonaire from Jim and Barrett to also inspire us.

Marek, we're envious of your awesome full-on windsurfing conditions at the Gorge. I do hope to post photos from our trip to Bonaire next week.

More for the Hood...

Dougs Beach 4.0 and 3.5 with huge swell for about an hour, then the wind stayed up but got very gusty....too much north in it.
Will have to get Sophie to take a 10 min break to take some pictures of me next time.
