Hatteras: I'm Back...

I know nobody gives a 💩. Sailed 6 straight days 4.5 to 7.0. Only downside is that the first day, I bruised a rib. Crappy sleep for a week and waist harness hurt something awful and had to go to seat which didn't hurt until it did. Convertible foil board absolutely flies as a conventional board. Randy is an animal - the guy is on the water from sun up to sun down. Gene windsported both sail and kite. Alan tested out some new gear and flew a really neat drone. Hope he grabbed some footage to post here. Big Al (formerly of Atlanta) is still Big Al - lots of fun, full of stories and great host.

The drive still sucks.

How did you hurt yourself? Just wondering if an impact vest (or lack thereof) was involved?

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

It didn't suck as bad on the way back to the Land that Wind Forgot as it did on the way there (400 miles of rain.) I think you win the Wind-Animal award though for the past week. You were the only one to sail on Monday when it rained all day. You should have told me you were having trouble sleeping. I've found my action cam videos do a good job of putting me to sleep. I'll send you a CD if you like.

BTW- looks like a good week ahead.

Not sure all what was involved. The best I can tell at this moment: A lot of wind (totally flattened 4.5) over 2 ft of water made for washboard chop. Not Lanier chop but dirt country road in a station wagon at 40 mph chop. The harness rode up a bit and pressed on a rib. The side it happened on was the direction the chop was worse. Consequently, sleeping on a kid's mattress in the bunk room didn't allow things to settle down. Sleeping in a real bed last night was a world of difference.
This is the same setup that I've sailed a lot in the last few weeks so was quite unexpected. I still wore the vest with the seat harness the rest of the week. I'm putting this down as somewhat of a freak thing. Only thing I'd do different is make sure the harness is really tight around the waist in those conditions.

Wm. - Sorry to hear about the bruised rib. Hope you're able to sail on Monday & Tuesday. It looks like OBX wind is coming to Atlanta next Wk.

Randy - Glad you're back to sailing on water. Will we be seeing you at Van Pugh?

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

No injuries for me but I did manage to break two Chinook tendons. Still one of the best OBX trip's for me so far, splitting my time there between Jon D's house in Buxton and Big Al's in Salvo. A big thanks to both for the invites.

Haven't edited the drone footage yet (It's mainly just aerials of the island, still nervous to take it over water) but here's a days worth of sailing in 36 seconds shot from my camera on the balcony.

Be sure to watch it in 1080.

Your video is further proof that time really flies when windsurfing! Nice use of time lapse to capture the action.

Probably sometime when nobody is there.

MD,
Me at 0:30, walking back. Kids, don't sail old tendon joints. If you are lucky, it's only a hike back.

btw, 1080 is a great suggestion and while you are clicking on the settings button, you can also choose half speed (among other options).

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

Gee - it's a shame no one warned us about how the Streamline type tendons seem to get brittle and break.

https://windsportatlanta.com/content/question-about-mast-base-21318

"I would avoid he "Streamline" style tendons - they are cylindrical about 3" by .75" I think. They get brittle as they age (even in storage) and can break easily. I've managed to break one just by bending it with my hands. If you have that kind of cut rate windsurf gear - the long walk back could be on you. "

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

I accept full responsibility for my failures. Although Randy's new Avatar may have had something to do with it.
Luckily William was hero of the day and brought me another base and saved me the long walk back in and also picked me up a new tendon at Ocean Air. Thanks again!

The older tendons did last much longer than the newer ones though. I still have one of my original tendons bases with the medal caps and Phillips screw

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

Do yourself a favor before you use them next time. See if you can bend the tendon mast foot with your bare hands. That will break them if they are too old. I think the old ones were better though. It could be that windsurf stuff is now sitting a lot longer in inventory somewhere so not as much life is left.

Agreed, maybe this thread will motivate others to check theirs.

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

I looked at the 2nd one that failed, it's not brittle at all in the middle but still failed at the top.

Re: Hatteras: I'm Back...

Mine broke the same way. It was an older one with the phillips screws and I did the prebend test, too. Since it didn't fail in the first ten minutes, obviously, there were some prebend tests on the water, too. Wink

Tendons just have a limited life span, imho. They are nice but there just isn't much material up there by the screws and any material degradation leaves little room for error.

In my defense, I replaced several tendons about two years ago. Problem was that I'd replaced two but not the third that failed. I couldn't remember if that one had been replaced, too, did the aforementioned bend test and asked myself, "Do you feel lucky, punk?" That base was in the trailer and not part of the normal day-to-day kit. I did pick up a new tendon to replace the one I do use regularly.

New Chinook tendons have this handy feature now: stamped manufacture date.

Dogs vs cats came up while we were in Hatteras. Score this one for having dogs. Biggrin
