Can’t believe what’s coming

Starting Tuesday the forecast looks amazing. It looks like we’ll make up for all those calm days this winter. Fingers crossed.

Re: Can’t believe what’s coming

I've got commitments Tuesday and Wed but, afterwards, I'm good. Yeah, two more Nor'easters for our friends up north.

Finally gave this ol' girl the long promised nose job. Glassed it and did some fairing today. Sanding and more fairing tomorrow. May hit the water unpainted. Former 276cm and 103 l is probably 235 and 98. Based nose off this: https://tabou-boards.com/boards/2018/wave-cross/3s-18/

Bringing it to OBX? Guess if it doesn't work out you could take it to the Junkyard of the Atlantic* and just leave it.

Re: Can’t believe what’s coming

It's the impending trip that got me off my butt and do this. I've been wanting to do it for years. I'll be surprised if it doesn't work given the other board I shortened and almost all of my boards now are 240 or less. But, I may have missed something in the recipe. It was just collecting space in the garage and I could barely give it away. I liked the way it jibed (in my memories) so it'll be fun to see how it behaves now.

Curious, what does chopping the nose off your board get you (performance wise)?

Re: Can’t believe what’s coming

Should sail the same for the most part, but will be much better for the forward loops :)..... oh, and most importantly it will now fit in the van much better.

Wow Webanardo da Vinci- that one looks really good! You could probably load up on old shortboards that nobody wants here, nose them and then sell them for some actual money in OBX.

For the people who do it for performance reasons, a smaller board that tucks into a wave better, among other things. Maybe not this exact post but read around and you'll get a sense of what they are working on: http://forums.boards.co.uk/showthread.php/78625-New-Simmer-stubby?p=1067637&viewfull=1#post1067637 Ola H. is the designer for Simmer. The Severne Nano is similar to my Mistral in dimensions and fairly parallel rails. http://www.severnesails.com/wave-sails/severne-nano

For the masses (ie me who isn't charging hard in Maui), a more portable board which loses the nose whose only function seemed to be to poke holes in the foot of the sail. The original idea that one needed that bit to keep the board from stuffing into the back of the wave proved to be relatively unfounded and why both wave and race boards have become progressively shorter over time.

You do lose a bit of volume (in the case of the wave board, the nose was so thin, I doubt more than a couple of liters) and tacking is a bit hairier for something really short. But overall, the volume lost isn't really meaningful or was sticking out of the water anyway.

I sailed the Protech last week and I can't tell that the board is any different other than I'm not worried about damaging a sail and the board fits easily into my car. It's still a bit hard to plane as before - needs to be absolutely powered - so I may take a bit out of the tail rocker behind the fin.

Oh, last thing. Cutting these boards up made me appreciate the build quality of the Protech's epoxy sandwich. The Mistral was a joke compared to it - the "carbon" was a 6 inch wide strip of carbon threads over glass mat. Shok Relevant: http://boardlady.com/fiberorientation.htm

On a serious note, I don't understand the sharp angles in the front. Is there a performance reason?

William, What paint did you use on the pro-tech?

Re: Can’t believe what’s coming

Marek, Sharp angles mean less having to blend in side rails to new, shorter shape but they really aren't that sharp. Some people just chop the thing flat (rob rock on youtube). Some try to make a more curved shape. I drew about 10 different shapes worrying about it until I saw the Nano. They didn't seem worried about rounding stuff off too much so I figured I didn't need to either since they probably built enough prototypes to sort it out. The Tabou is just a bit more rounded but basically the same - I basically measured the angles off the Tabou for mine. Actually, probably easier to shape and glass more of a curve than my shape. Those angles turned out to be a pain to work with.

Alan, basic enamel spray paint. John Parton of Protech told me years ago to use that. It's not as "hard" as better paints but easier to work with. Doesn't cover goofs as well so I end up spending a lot of time fairing out all the small flaws. (Did I mention I suck at this?)

Edit: the angles look sharper in the photo than in real life. I've put the board away for the day but will snap a top view tomorrow to show the rounded angles. And, dear heaven, anything is better than those pointy things I cut off. Maybe I can convince some Chinese to use my old noses instead of rhino horns.

Re: Can’t believe what’s coming

Sorry, I wasn’t specific. I was wondering more about the production boards - with the sharp corners in the nose..Is that the latest aesthetic fad or is there some reasoning behind it? Maybe they are just trying to make sure people notice the stubby nose?
For my repair I used enamel and primer from automotive paint store....as recommended by the Board Lady.

Chopped off about 3”, mainly because the front was so messed up.

Oh, Mr. Fancypants and his PepBoys paint! Biggrin

Seriously, having seen that board, I'd have had no idea it was banged up that badly. Well done, sir. Now, I have to up my game and get all the flaws out.

I think the pic/rendering shows more sharpness than real life.

The angular swallowtail, I think, is a lot of branding.

William, if you saved the nose you can make another high wind board.

Pretty wild day at Galts.

The start of this ride was not exactly as I envisioned it but it was fast. Neither was the end, but it was fun in between.
