Olympic Windsurfing may be done

Lots of buzz about resetting the sailing classes with windsurfing at risk again. Shok
The MAN, Neil Pryde, makes a great case to the IOC:

I signed. For the hundredth time, windsurfing and kiting should be in. Both.

But if anyone things the Olympics are about athletics and not politics... It'll be interesting to see how the US votes. US Sailing was all gong ho on kites (to the exclusion of windsurfers) as long as the Heineken siblings were beating everyone. We do have the world's top ranked women, though.

With 2024 being in Paris and the French being so strong in both kites and windfoil, I wonder what deals they are willing to make under the table.

Quote:
The WP recommendation of placing 5 events under review gives World Sailing sufficient flexibility to achieve gender equity, include 2 or 4 mixed events and consider adding new events (including the possibility of a second medal opportunity). The WP considers that there are 3 basic event types fundamental to the sport from a global perspective that should be included in the 2024 Olympic Games: One Person (Men and Women), Two Person (Men and Women), and Mixed. The 10 current events were discussed extensively by the WP including their current and potential universality, innovation, youth appeal, diversity and media appeal. The WP formed the view that the following events best represent these 3 basic event types and should be retained and not placed under review: • Men’s One Person Dinghy • Women’s One Person Dinghy • Men’s Skiff • Women’s Skiff • Mixed Two Person Multihull 2.2 The WP considers that the two Windsurfing events should be placed under review not necessarily to remove Windsurfing from the 2024 event programme but to enable a review of the Windsurfing event and equipment. The WP recognises that windsurfing and kitesurfing are very different to each other and both have the potential to meet the objectives of World Sailing and the IOC for the Olympic events.

Very interesting. The paper also gets to the point why so many sailing spots are in jeopardy: World Sailing's failure to adhere to the IOC's request for better gender equality and participation in sailing events. I don't recall seeing that mentioned before.

Quote:
World Sailing did not comply with the key IOC goal of achieving gender equity at an event level for 2020 and made no change to the set of events selected. Subsequently, the IOC reduced the athlete quota for World Sailing from 380 athletes at Rio 2016 to 350 athletes at Tokyo 2020. Sailing was removed from the Paralympic Games, in part due to a lack of understanding of the International Paralympic Committee goals for the Paralympics. The IOC, through the Olympic Agenda 2020 strategic road map has made it clear that change is required and World Sailing should ensure that it meets the IOC expectations for future Olympic Games.

Shok

RS:X looks to be officially moving to a post 2020 merger with the RS:Convertible as we've pretty much known for a year or more.

8. In order to achieve this, the RS:X Class is looking to merge with the RS:X Convertible Class to bring foiling windsurfing under its wing, in order to test this new technology, as in other sailing events (America’s Cup, catamarans, and others). 9. This will allow dual events with both conventional windsurfing and foiling windsurfing events running side by side, which will deliver exceptional footage and images as well as providing sailors with opportunities to learn new skills. Already taking place in Miami (end of January 2018) this will be implemented, as test events only, for consideration by all.

...16. Finally, the RS:X Class acknowledges that with WS is looking to showcase the breadth of the sport and that there will be a demand for Kiteboarding to be included as an Olympic discipline for 2024.
17. The RS:X Class agrees and supports the principle that the whole sport of sailing should be showcased, similar to both windsurfing and kiteboarding living alongside each other at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games where both sports will be looking to support World Sailing in delivering a fantastic event with the perfect backdrop of Buenos Aires.

Well guys, if Windsurfing does get kicked out of the Olympics, perhaps this will make you feel better.
