Saturday Sweating in Feb 2/ 24

I most likely will be sailing late Saturday morning until the wind dies or darkness comes.
If it stays S / SW I will probably launch at Old Fed*
If it changes to S / SE I will go to Vanns Tavern
If just straight South I might go to 2 mile creek boat ramp. We have someone new to windsurfering that will be coming

If Windward 400 wants to join in also please pm or post . Looks like the wind will be light but enough to get you moving. It shoud be a good day for learning. (Maybe not too much boat traffic / waves )

*changed from Holly Park

I'll be somewhere. Have been spying the weekend for a while. Hopefully, the water is warming a bit - the dome effect has been brutal the last few weeks. (Not to mention it'd be nice to feel my toes)

Astonishing summer-like heat cooked the Eastern U.S. on Wednesday, smashing all-time records for February warmth in cities in at least ten states, from Georgia to Maine. At least 24 cities recorded their hottest February temperature on record on Wednesday, including New York City (78°), Hartford, CT (74°) and Concord, NH (74°). According to Weather Underground weather historian Christopher C. Burt, February 20 - 21 marked the most extraordinary heat event to ever affect the Northeastern quadrant of the U.S. during the month of February, since official records began in the late 1800s. He catalogued the following eight states that tied or beat all-time February state heat records over the past two days, noting that in the case of Maine and Vermont, “It is simply amazing to beat a state temperature record by some 8°F!”: https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/summer-february-80-massachusetts-78-nyc

There are still some dots in the KRYY (toona) forecast. Trouble is deep south direction like that is not very good at Galts and the beach park is probably still closed. Fields Landing can be pretty good on a SSW. I called Cherokee Parks and Rec and was told the park is now open and will be over the weekend. $5 to get in but geezers or liars who can pass for 62 get in free. (In the half dozen times I've been there, I never saw anyone collecting money at the gate. ) It is a bit of a drive - off 575 exit 16 (I think) and the drive a while more.

Randy / Simon
I think some of us are going to 2 Mile Creek Park.(if it stays S/SW)
I will have the Mistral Competition at the waters edge if you want to relive some memories.
You dont even have to rig... or carry it

Re: Saturday Sweating in Feb 2/ 24

Well that's tempting I will have to think about it, but probably I will be heading to some place a bit dryer.

BTW - 2Mile is pretty good on SW, but not so much for S.

Considering you are on the N side of the lake, another spot you might want to try with a longboard is Kieth's Bridge. It can be windy there on W or SW this time of year when the rest of the lake is covered by the dome effect. Al and I used to go there from time to time. He would carry his gear through the woods to launch, while I would just tack up wind with a longboard to get to open water.

Shift change dots are back Shok For SW, I'm going to LLSC. Free free to join me there. Sadly, the rigging area is now without grass, but SW wind is good there. Gate code 0676

We chose 2 mile because we have someone new to windsurfing joining us tomorrow. So we want to do an onshore launch for her.

Its kinda boxed in there also hopefully it will be a safe launch for her.

TIL about James Doohan (Scotty)

Quote:
At the beginning of the Second World War, Doohan joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and was a member of the 14th (Midland) Field Battery, 2nd Canadian Infantry Division.[9] He was commissioned a lieutenant in the 14th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He was sent to England in 1940 for training. He first saw combat landing at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers, Doohan led his men to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines, where they took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 11:30 that night, Doohan was hit by six rounds fired from a Bren Gun by a nervous Canadian sentry:[10] four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was stopped by a silver cigarette case given to him by his brother.[6] His right middle finger had to be amputated, something he would conceal on-screen during most of his career as an actor.[11]

Doohan graduated from Air Observation Pilot Course 40 with eleven other Canadian artillery officers[12] and flew Taylorcraft Auster Mark V aircraft for 666 (AOP) Squadron, RCAF as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in support of 1st Army Group Royal Artillery. All three Canadian (AOP) RCAF squadrons were manned by artillery officer-pilots and accompanied by non-commissioned RCA and RCAF personnel serving as observers.[13][14]

Although he was never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Doohan was once labeled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force". In the late spring of 1945, on Salisbury Plain north of RAF Andover, he slalomed a plane between telegraph poles "to prove it could be done"—earning himself a serious reprimand. (Various accounts cite the plane as a Hurricane or a jet trainer; however, it was a Mark IV Auster.)[15][16]

Re: Saturday Sweating in Feb 2/ 24

Some good news.
Ana did very good on her second time on a board considering the waves.
CP helped her a lot.
And....
I was comfortable wearing a Shorty...fairly happy about that being February and all.

The bad news.
Powerboat and jetski season has begun and the bassboats may have not known where they were going but they did not want to be late when they got there.

Hopefully summer is not yet here, so it will get colder and most the boats and jet skis will vanish in a puff of smoke. Except for the fishermen, who seem to be out in even worse weather than us.

Went on a group bike ride, then wind picked up more than forecast, so I missed it. How were conditions??? Good at Sailing Club?

Saw a whitecap or 2, so not great unless you're me, in which case it was near perfect... coulda been steadier. TVAW, LLSC is good for capturing learners in S to SW if blown downwind. In a real emergency, club boats are nearby to help too. I've noticed the back side of 3 sisters is the fast lane & short cut for a lot of boats going between the north end and Holiday or points south.

Re: Saturday Sweating in Feb 2/ 24

I met Chris at the LLSC. A bit puffy but as long as you could get a decent puff to get up on the wing, you were gone. The water inhibited the wind a bit. It did steady around closing time and, with the reduced boat traffic, made for some sublime runs. I did get a "Randy" moment when a 30 ft power boat cut in front of me just as a gust hit. Sure was a lot nice gliding over the wake than pounding through it.

But, this kid got the "eff it, it's spring" award. Typical grom with about the body fat of a glass of skim milk. He was playing in the water at the LLSC. He had a snorkel and mask. I'm thinking, that's a bit useless with the cold water. Then, HE USED THE SNORKEL AND MASK. Yup, swam fully immersed, face down. Yikes.

I will take Foildoods advice.
I thought it was going to be quiet over at 2 Mile.

I'm also keeping my back of my mind:
No more trying to get people to start windsurfing on a weekend.
