Anybody up for a marathon this spring?

26.2 miles. If this is ambitious, we can look at 26.2 km.

Can you or may you? As my third grade teacher, Miss Wormwood said, there's an important distinction. Lol

(Yes, you may.)

We did that "downwinder" years ago from West Bank Park, near the dam, to Sunrise and had a swell time of it. A few sailed back rather than get rides to fetch their cars. It wasn't so hard with lot's of reaching going either way. Longboreds were the call back then, but I wonder if something Formulaic might work on the right day... or Foilish? Scratch one-s head

It's at this moment when you ponder the advantages of a wide board plus the bail out of a daggerboard that your realize, for all it's flaws, the RS:X has something going for it. Until my overpowered chops improve, I'd be divided between Formula and longboard. Ultimately, sailing what everyone else has might be better just for the company. You and Shreddog made the round trip on IMCOs or something similar, right? I was on an IMCO that day and had so much fun that I bought one.

Edit: Poking around the web site, came across this page in the wiki which I updated a bit. https://windsportatlanta.com/wiki/Long_Distance_Sail

We did the sail a couple of years a long time ago: one good weekend, one weekend that got stumped by the dome effect (started out planing and ended up pumping last couple of miles) and I think skunk. Typical program was to set aside a weekend in advance and then plan day and direction based on forecast. If we are doing a circle, beginning doesn't matter. If we do this, we probably should strongly encourage cell phones in dry bags.

Chris, Alan S. and kiters: You think we can rope any other knuckleheads into something like this? Cats, Lasers, keelboats, etc. This needs to happen on the lake.

Re: Anybody up for a marathon this spring?

Could pitch it to LLSC peeps. There is a "Small Boat Long Distance Race" in November (I won it once!) and lots of guys come out for it. (It'd be nice to have some kind of support boat to shepherd the wayward). The Acats have done a long distance thing "to the dam" using an island up that way as the rounding mark. The one here* doesn't block any wind, so more fun for planing conditions.

Instead of an actual marathon, maybe just make it The Dam Race.

When we raced at Charleston, we did an aprés-racing Fort Sumpter jaunt using "Go-Kart Racing Rules" wherein the lead board has to circle back to the end of the line. That way nobody gets left and, in planing conditions (the only conditions we wanted to do this), it was just more jibing fun for the big dogs.

Laser would be a fun boat to do it in. Can handle a lot of wind and not a dog in light air. The A cats will kill everyone unless someone gets that kitefoiling thing down in the next few months. They may not be fast in the open but they can ghost through lulls between islands. But, I'm rarin' to give them a challenge.
