39th Fall Classic - Details and Notice of Race

It's that time again! The world's second longest running windsurfing race - the Fall Classic. This year is the 39th running and, like a fine wine, Sigourney Weaver and Sean Connery, it keeps improving with age. Here is the official announcement, the Notice of Race. For you non-racey types (most of us), it includes the schedule of events, and other stuff that you'd want to know. This is a great race for racers and great weekend for non-racers.

BIG NEWS ! I just got word that the Neil Pryde foil demo guy will be at the Fall Classic. Details to follow, but he'll likely be coaching anybody that wants to try out their foil board... probably a small fee, but this should be an easy way to check it out!

Who said man was not meant to fly? NeilPryde is evolving the RS:X and RS:One classes with equipment that matches incredible performance with the whole new sensation of windsurfing – foiling. Enjoy this footage showcasing our RS:X Convertible one-design.

Re: 39th Fall Classic - Details and Notice of Race

I got word from Cody on the Charter Boards. It's $75 for the weekend and includes everything– board and sail. (A sweet deal for us).

I've chartered Konas a couple of times. I have to say it's a pleasure to sail and a very clever design. Unlike other raceboards where you have a moveable mast track (mast forward for upwind, back with centerboard retracted for reaching in a breeze), the Kona mast position is fixed. As the wind picks up, the stepped tail allows you to move back to the footstraps and seamlessly transition to riding the fin only, upwind or reaching. Very cool.

I've long been a fan of One Design racing and owned several IMCOs during their heyday. Most Open Class racers have since adopted what is essentially the Raceboard Class rules. It's a "box rule" on the boards with a 9.5 limit on sails. Equipes, MegaCats, Lightnings, Exocet and others fit in the box.

The extra benefit of Kona Class racing is the range of sail sizes matched to the rider's weight. It's a great idea that levels the field in all conditions but especially in light wind where lightweights-in-light wind previously had a huge advantage. If you're a big guy, you get a big sail. Here's the breakdown of weight/size:

Kilos to lbs here:

http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/weight/kg-to-pound.htm

I'm hoping we can tempt 3 more folks to commit to chartering a Kona for the weekend so that they'll bring the truck. If you're on the fence because you don't have a "competitive" long board or only have shortboards, this is as easy as it gets to give racing a shot.

If "racing windsurfers" seems lame or daunting, I'd say you might be right. But it's still FUN... and if you jump in to try it, you'll get a swell shirt, a chance at some cool door prizes, good grub & libations all weekend AND a complete distraction from whatever is troubling you. Shok
