Well since we are talking about new tech, this is a SUP, but it might even be more logical for windsurfing where a rigid back end of the board would be an advantage. Mounting fins, foils etc would seem more secure and it is much more portable.

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
They should make a foldable kiteboard, hinged in the middle so the 4 foot long board becomes 2 foot long, easily remove the fins, and fold toward the bottom, and remove the grab bar/handle from the top. It would probably fit in the kite bag/knapsack for travel. The grab bar/handle when reinstalled on the unfolded board would be the brace. When riding, your feet/weight is not in the center, so it should not fold up. Just an idea, and probably has already been tried and found not to work.

edit: Richard's post just makes everything I said just wrong so I deleted a lot of it.
As long as a board fits in the back of the average Euro hatchback, that's going to restrain the desire for something smaller.
Are you trying to fit this into the cockpit of your Laser?
Side note: has Randy tried to talk you into kiting your Laser yet? That's a youtube video waiting to happen.
No original ideas left. I feel like Professor Chaos on Southpark, where every evil plot he thought of, "The Simpsons Already Did It",

Originality is over-rated. Execution often turns out to be more important. Too many examples to list but one is fairly relevant:

Looking at the second pic makes me want to get out the longboard on a breezy day on flat water.

Very intriguing. Foil-ready, too. A bit heavier than a normal board but if you are trying to cram a bunch of stuff in the car for vacation, pretty cool.
