You may have missed that Branson was learning to foil - that learning curve is pretty steep at the beginning for kites.
I'm not sure kitesurfing is for you, though. Who wants to spend all their time on the water with some scrawny lass hanging on your back? Looks like a good way to herniate a disc to me.
