Windsurfing in 50mph winds

Had my strongest wind session so far - this past weekend. In Costa Rica we usually get several 4.0/3.7 days, but on Sunday I was at Roosevelt on the Columba River. Used a 3.2m Hotsail and was sailing overpowered, winds were 40-50mph.
William I have a short video clip but not sure how to upload such a large file

Probably best to youtube or vimeo it and then add to the post via the appropriate buttons here. Easier to use their bandwidth and disk space.

(We aren't on a hosting service. This is strictly a DIY affair.)

Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks William,
I understand about the disk space. But I'll probably skip it ....not much into the whole youtube/social media thing (even though people could view on here, but it just feels more private).
I'll take pictures next time.
What are your dates for the Gorge again, there is a good chance I will be there.

You can set youtube to not publish stuff so it remains below the radar and/or disable comments. Not really a social thing - more of it being an easier way to manage resources. If you want, I can upload it. If it isn't intolerably big, email it to me. At least we can grab screenshots.

Contact Randy, he's the Youtube Yoda here on how to do it. He puts up a bunch of stuff that stays off the radar.

July 4-6 I'll be at lower elevations. July 7-8 is when I'll be cold, tired and miserable. Why I'm involved in anything that involves an avalanche transponder is beyond me.

All you have to do is when you upload the video designate it as unlisted, rather than public. Then it won't show up on any search and it won't show up on your youtube page to the public. You can post a link to it, and put it on any web page you want and you can see it anytime you want as well. I do that all the time for various reasons.

You can also upload it to your dropbox and just post/text/email the link.

I have had two 3.2m sessions in my life. I was just happy to my gear to the water, much less complete a jibe. Good job! Thanks for posting.

How I imagine even getting my rig to the water in 3.2 winds:

You don't go fast, you don't jump. All you care is to stay up wind. What's the point?

There isn't one. Biggrin

“People ask me, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?' and my answer must at once be, 'It is of no use.'There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron... If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.” ― George Mallory, Climbing Everest: The Complete Writings of George Mallory

I suspect that it was smoother by the beach than it was in the middle. But, I've never sailed there - what do I know?

Ed, you need to ask arrogantj how that Everest thing worked out for Mallory.

Re: Windsurfing in 50mph winds

I was going to mention the part about Mallory not making it back down all the way. As far as useless activities go, I think windsurfing is safer and just as much fun.

As for sailing in 50 MPH winds -

Re: Windsurfing in 50mph winds

All good comments, and correct by the way.
Keep in mind this is 20+ seconds out of 4 hour day. I feel lucky that someone took the time to take the short clip and then share it with me....beggars can't be choosers.
- yes swell on far side was huge (up to 8ft), as the river takes turns the swell shifts from one side of the river to the other
- jumping in that much wind can be both scary...and dangerous if you get separated from the rig...would be very hard to catch swimming after it...bad especially in 53F water
- filming the swell side was not practical (about a mile away), Hatchery would be better as the swell is smaller but close to the launch
- Will try with a GoPro on the next good day
