Foggy Start to 6.0m Day in Nags Head

Again today the forecast was for low wind. During breakfast fog rolled in. Minutes later the Sound churned with whitecaps as wind whipped in from the North. Afraid the session would be short I pulled on my wetsuit & ran to the beach with a 7.0m sail & 110 liter board. Within a minute of sailing off, the shore line disappeared in the mist. I was alone in the fog. The water was warm, the air cool, and the only sound was the tip-tip-tip of wavelets tapping the bottom of my board as I raced through the water.

As the air began to clear, the wind picked up until the 7.0 sail was becoming hard to handle. When I reached the beach, Eric was heading out, and Marcel was rigging up. I grabbed my 6.0 wave sail and headed back out to find strong wind had built swell perfect for riding the waves.

Before the wind dropped at Noon, I grabbed my GoPro camera to capture some of the action.

Here's another photo of Marcel, Roxana & Baby Joshua. Roxana was getting her sea legs back windsurfing when the wind was light.

Nice pix. I was wondering if when you were sailing in the fog whether you could see vortices around your sail or mast? Make some interesting pictures if you did.

No, I couldn't see vortices around the sail. Being in the fog, It's hard to see anything but a foggy view. I've seen vortices forming around aircraft wings when flying in clear air jut above the dew point, but it's hard to see them when flying in dense fog.

I've seen them coming off airplane wings in fog I think, but its probably a little different when the thing is moving at 100 MPH ++++

I recall a guy posting back in the day on rec.windsurfing about sailing when it was snowing saying he could see the vortices coming off of his sail.
