Not so windy here, meanwhile in Denmark...

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/denmark-produces-140-per-cent-of-its-electricity-needs-through-wind-power-10381648.html

Quote:

Due to an unusually windy day, wind farms in Denmark managed to produce 140 per cent of the country's electricity needs.

By Thursday evening, the Nordic nation's wind turbines were producing 116 per cent of Denmark's electricity needs, a figure that rose to 140 per cent in the early hours of the morning.

Real time output: http://energinet.dk/Flash/Forside/index.html

If we had wind turbines at Lake Lanier, I don't think there'd be enough electricity to light an LED path light.

I have often thought that wind turbines surrounding the lake would be a great idea. If there was wind (which doesn't happen that often) you'd get electricity. However, in the times without wind, I see no reason, in principle, they couldn't be run backwards to produce wind like a big fan. Would make the lake a great sailing spot 80-90% of the time. It would also use up all of that wasted coal fired capacity sitting idle nowadays due to the low cost of natural gas and help us keep up with China in CO2 production......

Randy, should you tire of retirement, I see a bright future for you as a politician. The coal industry needs creative ideas like yours to keep the mines open & protect American jobs.

How's this for a slogan - "CO2 - good for windsurfing, good for jobs, good for America"

I may or may not have seen this up near the Big Chicken.

Oh man. I was going to surprise everybody with my new pickup truck. Now you've ruined it.

Randy, I hate to be brutally honest but I don't think either of us are tall enough to actually climb into a truck like that.

CO2 may be building up, just in time to save us from the ice age coming in 15 years:

Oh, heavens, I hope you don't cause Barrett to have a cardiac event...

I saw something about this a few days ago. Your post prompted further reading. First, the best report of what she actually said is that she's proposed a new model of solar activity that is supposedly more accurate. She's made no claims to effects on climate change - that's the media's doing.

http://www.ras.org.uk/news-and-press/2680-irregular-heartbeat-of-the-sun-driven-by-double-dynamo

Scientists have been discussing this for years (the next lull in sunspot activity, not the mini ice age) but the effect is still overwhelmed by rising CO2 levels.

www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2011/06/what-if-the-sun-went-into-a-new-grand-minimum/

There are many hypotheses for the cause of the last mini ice age including increased volcanic activity and lower human populations caused by Black Death, and European "contact" with the Americas. Sun spot activity actually is one of the more tenuous since the cooling began before the ebbs in solar activity.

Quote:
The drop in global average temperatures in paleoclimate reconstructions at the start of the Little Ice Age was between about 1560 and 1600, whereas the Maunder minimum began almost 50 years later. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunder_Minimum#Little_Ice_Age

Not to discredit the original research, but the media is trying to make this something that it's not. Think of it as Dr. Oz reporting the latest way to lose weight...

Last edit: for anyone else reading - Randy is a very smart guy. Do not assume he posted this because of its scientific merit but more to "stimulate" conversation. My comments aren't really aimed at him but someone else who might come across this and think, "damn, I'll need a thicker wetsuit in a few years."
