Very interesting windlord. I wonder what is different now?
I remember 01/02 -- man, the launch at Van Pugh was pretty sweet. Practically no wind shadow on west winds and plenty dry land to put your gear by the water.
When I got to VP yesterday I remarked on how long the reef was that comes off Aqualand. It now connects to the westernmost island (#16 on your map). At certain lake levels, sailing just off the lee shore of the 1-2 ft high reef in glassy water that still gets all the wind, is one of my favorite things... bear waaay off and rip, try to remember how to duck jibe, etc. Well, got up there yesterday-- the reef is 8 ft high!! The wind shadow made it useless for my old games.
Still, one sweet afternoon-- and amazingly, I mostly remember how to do it.
6.5 (could have been 5.5 for a while) on my ancient Explosion 288.
Hey, are we denying to those mussels any incentive to adapt??
In '87 when the lake was down about 16 ft, the Corps said it would take 3-to-5 years of above average rainfall to restore to full pool. In November, the sky opened for 3 days in the watershed above the lake and we were over full pull within 5 days.
That said, it would still be a nice gesture if regatta participants could bring an extra 5-gallon donation. Maybe Chris can re-think how the door prizes are awarded.
While I am worried about not being able to windsurf, what happens if we don't have any water to drink? Makes not being able to windsurf seem like a minor problem......

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
I remember the drought in the late 80's .. we couldnt even get our boat out of baldridge marina. lake levels seemed lower then but according to glen beck this year is worse...it's like the 5th driest in history
Interestingly, it is not unprecedented for Lanier to be this low. According to COE historical data for October 11, the lake has been lower.
The lake is currently at 1058.05. It was lower on this date in 2001 (1058.02), 1987 (1055.01) and 1982 (1057.97).
Other notable years are 2007 (1061.15), 1994 (1061.01), 1989 (1058.38), 1973 (1061.17) and 1971 (2060.15).

By December of 01 the water was at least a foot or two lower than it is now. I went up Wed to check on the dock/boats and while we still have some water, we don't have that much.
Thanks for the article on the declining water level at Lake Lanier.

juliette is looking pretty sad too. I heard allatoona looked like a dust bowl.
Hey Gene remember that wind i asked you to bring back? bring some water too!

Clarks Hill is pretty low, but nothing like Lanier or Altoona. We are lucky that we have a couple of big lakes that feed into us.

Quick, let's have a regatta!!!
After hearing that bit of information... I'll not be taking a whiz until I arrive at Lake Lanier next Friday afternoon.
