Great idea but not a great location. They have a great spot on the point on the main channel. Good for you kiters out of Old Federal but the wind in the slot off VP can often be 5-10 mph more on a windy day than Aqualand. We have a pretty good correlation with the wind speeds reported at Gilmer. It will be interesting to see what the correlation is with this spot and out in the main channel.

Not trying to be a buzz kill but having made the turn from VP around the point above Aqualand and then suckered into trying to make a downwinder into in front of the sailing club, the wind speed in that part of the lake can differ significantly from, say, the slot above VP and Lake Lanier Islands.

It would be pretty interesting to see where there equipment is acutally located. If its not in a windshadow, could still be useful. Depends a lot on the direction of the wind.

They have an interesting web page, with weather, etc. Even if the wind numbers aren't the best, the water temp might be pretty useful. (The COE number provides water temp, but I question how often they acutally update it.)

Now, what would be really useful might be a camera mounted somewhere showing the state of the water.

BTW - check out the gallery. Some nice pix.

I hate to be a downer but they are reporting 0 with gusts of 3 while Gilmer's last report was 10 G22.

The pictures make it look like it faces very east in the LLSC bay - am I oriented correctly?

Gee, I hope they are right, otherwise were missing a good day. I can't tell how to figure out their orientation, except for trying to sail over there.

rehash of the same eta, ngm we have here. the models are only specific for certain stations, generally airports as that's where the official NWS stations tend to be. There is no "Van Pugh" model data point. There are some for Gainesville and for some the closest actually is Athens.

Look at it if you choose but we've been looking at the same data for years. Also, generally, those services that have one hour predictions are just interpolations. The government models (unless they've changed in the last 6-8 months) output in three hour intervals. Given the raw CPU horsepower it takes for that, it may be a while before we get down to a one hour resolution.

I like it, even if it isn't anything new. Nice visual presentation, and it goes out further than the eta and ngm models. NGM, only gives 2 reads per day. The shorter term models give every 3 or 4 hours, but only for 2 days.

While were at it, here's another hourly model. Nice visuals, but tends to be too optimistic more than a few days out.

I like that one Randy because it's from a .gov domain (which means it's public and we can suck it down)

Marcel and Randy do have good points about the windguru site - apologies if I sounded too much like a grump -

Anybody sail Lanier Sunday

Couldn't make it myself, but it looked windy at home.

Please post what happened. It could help tell whether the Gilmer or Aqualand site is more accurate. :?: Gilmer was saying 10-16 with gusts to the 20's most of the afternoon. Aqauland was saying 5-10s untill very late in the day.

Aqualand:

Gilmer

I sailed on Sat. Gilmer was reporting 9-14 or so. Aqauland 4-8. The later seemed to be correct.

This seems odd. The photos from the Platinum Dock site are definitely from A'land, but the little data box sez "Observed at Sterling on the Lake, Flowery Branch" . Sterling on the Lake is a development on the east side of 985, maybe 15 miles from Lanier. If the instrument is at their clubhouse, it is in a deep valley with no fetch to speak of at all. The people at Aqualand don't know anything about the Platinum Dock website. They also said they no longer have any weather instruments there at all except for a stormscope (radar). They used to have an anemometer near the store that was pretty good for any kind of west wind, but it's gone now. I used to call the store and ask them to look out the window for whitecaps, but that was not very reliable-- 'the help' sometimes didn't know the difference between a w'cap and a white elephant.

Now, I just call Gene...
