Hatteras Update

Lisa & I got here 1:00 Sat to find Greg B & Danny J already blasting around, Pip B (from Boston) Bruce H and I joined them and had a great afternoon. Sail sizes ranged from 5.5 to 6.5 (pip). I sailed my 5.9 on the 105 liter board and then went to the Wild board. Life is good!

Sunday, would you believe 350 pounds of windsurfer on 18.8 square meters of sail? well, how about Danny J and I sailing a Tandem board? It was 10 to 15 and we were able to plane around, turning the rig around and getting going again in deep water is tricky. Lots of fun.

Today's, monday, forcast looks iffy, we might try surfing, but the rest of the week looks good.

More updates later.

Let us know when Plop decides to loop that bad boy...

that'll be one heck of a splash.

Here's the latest from Hatteras; Monday was not much wind SO, Danny J, Greg B and I tried surfing. I'll just say no one got hurt.

Tuesday was a great day, early in the am, the wind was pertty light so I took my 8.5 out on the Tandem board alone. That was fun, like sailing a giant course board. Then I tried the 8.5 on the start with the stock 40cm fin and that was fun. Then the wind really started to pick up. It was out of the SW, warm and built all day. I started on the 5.9 on the 105 ltr and 80 ltr wild board. Then the 5.9 some how got a hold in it. So I took a break for lunch and it started blowing real hard. I went back out on a 4.5 and had ALOT of FUN. Everyone sailed until dark. There were alot of tired beat up sailors that night.

Today, Wed., it's blown until around 2:00 but has slacked off some right now. Hopefully it will come back this afternoon. Everyone had a good session this morning, I was on my 5.8 (good to have a spare sail or two) on the 105 ltr board. More updates later.

Gene, you should have stayed in "normally not so windy GA". Two great days with temperatures in the 70’s and water still warm. Solid 6 and even less for those with less pounds. Once again I am repeating: in Atlanta Tuesday from 11 to 4 a nice 7.0 and Wednesday solid 6 from 11 to 6pm. I know it's hard to believe.

Solid 6? Man, what was I doing on my 9.4?

Voltar's telling the truth, though. Way up by Lake Lanier Islands, it was really spanking and when I turned off the wind to come home, I was holding on for dear life. Gotta love adjustable outhauls- I'd have been cooked otherwise (Voltar, make sure you get one). definitely blowing in the hi teens up there today.

Enough of this wide board madness- anyone have any ideas how we can launch closer to the Islands? It really blows harder up there. There had to be about a 5 mph difference today. I don't mind sailing upwind to get there but it's a shame that then I'm on the big stuff when it's time to play. And it's a long way to sail upwind on a small board/fin.

William, you left too early man! The wind shifted a little more to the North and blew a lot harder after you left. Oh well, thanks for your sacrafice.

If I'd left any later, I'd have been jailed for child neglect. I was happy with my 1 1/2 hrs.

Glad I could take a 9.4 for you (I was going to say bullet but given that our guys are really doing that in Iraq, I'd feel like such a poser if I did).

I wish I could've done the 6.4 thing, too, but I got a few good adrenaline rides in anyways on a 75 degree day. As we talked about, given what recent Octobers have been like, I felt grateful with just having wind.

While Voltar was on his 7.0, we small folks were on a 5.5 and less between 3:30pm and 5pm (and having a blast). Forecast for Saturday and Sunday is looking promising; sand those fins and start making excuses why you can’t help plant the perennials this weekend.

Sundayshould be real promising as I have 10 reasons why I can't go...

Remember that the Fall Classic is this weekend. Come up for grub, fun and even race if you wish. It's a good launch and a better dinner.

Many years ago I used to sail this long skinny kind of board with a great big fin in the middle of it. The best part was you could sail upwind really well, and then when you got there, the thing would slide back into your board and you could sail real fast. I forget what they called them. I don't think they make em anymore. Maybe Gene's consignement could help you find one.

Radndy,
But they are sooooooo hard to jump- and, I've only seen Robby Naish loop one and that was notable enough to make a video. Twelve feet of epoxy ain't what Buddy Love was thinking about when he saw all those whitecaps.

The wind you got Wed afternoon, must have come thru Hatteras wed NIGHT! After sailing Wed morning, it didnt come back up that afternoon, but it did howl Wed all night, with gust over 50 mph. Thursday morning, very early (8:30, temp 48 degrees) with full suit, hood and gloves, I started on my 5.8 on the 105 ltr board but it was droping off qucikly, then I rigged my 7.0 on the 105 and then went to the 135 ltr board. After a couple of hours, it was gone for the day. Danny J, Bruce H and Pip also sailed the morning. In the afternoon, Christian helped Myra work on her sailing. That afternoon, I took my 5.9 to be repaired and hit the shops.

The forcast doesnt look like much today (fri) but hopefully we'll get some of that wind ya'll are talking about over the weekend. If we dont sail today, it still will have been a good week, 4 good days, 5.9 or smaller, out of 7 with one 4.5 day. Thats not counting the tandem board, start day. I love this place.

More updates later.

Gene,

The unspoken truth is that all our Atlanta wind talk is really just envy.

Well, it did blow Fri afternoon enough to run the big stuff, 8.5 on 135ltr board. But it was pertty cold and I went out with just a farmer john suit, immediately fell in and like to froze. I came back in and put on my big suit with hood & gloves. Most everybody sailed as it was alot of peoples last day to sail, I still have another week. So the week was pertty good sailing 5 of 7 days, or 6 of 7 counting the tamden board session.

Today (sat) is looking pertty bad wind wise, it's warm when the sun pops out but its in and out. I might go out and try to figure out the heli tack that i've only been working on for a million years.

The forcast for Sun & Mon looks promising. I hope Atlanta gets some wind over the weekend because that means it's on it's way to hatteras. More updates later.

Sun , we did get to sail but just the big stuff, I was on my 8.5 on the 135 ltr board, then on the start.
Mon and Tues, was real lite wind so Gary Brown (boston) & I tried surfing again, Gary did pretty good, but I definately need more time on the waves.
Tues nite it rained, stormed and howled. Wed AM it was still blowing, Greg Chinick, was the first on the water on a 4.5, then the rest of us followed him on 4.5s, then it almost completely shut down, fearing it was shutting down for the day and since my 8.5 was rigged, I headed out on it with my 134 ltr board, and was just barely planing, THEN, it went from 8.5 to 4.5 in about 5 seconds. I knew I was in trouble when Greg C went screaming by me on a 4.5 as I was trying to figure out how to get back to the beach. I did the "walk of shame", then went back out on the 4.5 for a few runs before it went back to 8.5, It was weird, all of this happened before 10am. Wed afternoon it filled in some and we did go back out on the big stuff.
The forcast for the rest of the week doesnt look good, but who knows. I might have to try more surfing!

Well, this is the final update, and I hate to say, it didnt blow thurs or fri and we headed home on Sat. The second week was pertty bad, really only one sailing day, and it was the weird wed. We did try to surf on thursday without much success.

Still had fun, I still love this place, and cant wait until the spring trip (usually better than the fall). And the season in Atlanta is just cranking up.
