Is it cold this time of year or in the winter? I don't wear anything till it's in the high 40s (although I'll take a neoprene hood with me in the low 50s and below in case I have to swim or get my hair wet). A neoprene hood works and on the cold days a fleece cap made to go under a bicycling helmet (I look like Snoopy but it's really warm).
When it's real cold, I wear a hooded neoprene vest under my wetsuit, ( a sleeveless vest with the hood attached), it provides an extra layer of neoprene to the body, keeps your head warm, AND keeps the cold water off your neck and back when you fall. I hate when that happens. They also make hooded vest made of some other material which isnt as restricting as neoprene, but I havent tried it.
Also, I normally wear a helmet when it's blowing and when I sail alone.
