St. Pete report

Just got back from a few days in St. Pete.  Sat morning it blew 15 ish but we were busy and looked forward to getting on the water in the pm.  You guessed it..."you shoulda been here this morning"

Simon got the Starboard Kiddy wet and pronounced it an instant success.  More tippy than the Start (and about 100 liters less volume) but shorter and easier to handle.

Sun- Lisa did a triathlon.  Watching one you almost get sucked into it, forgetting its about 3 hrs of panting like a dog.  Windsurfing definitely rules. Funny thing: the open class winner was announced as the overall winner but it was discovered some hours later after everyone had gone home that actually an age-grouper (general entrant) had the best time overall.  Imagine getting that message on your answering machine, "uh, could we have our trophy back? We have a smaller one we'd like to send you."  oh, yeah, Sunday, no wind.

Monday, light E in the am- sailed the Start at Tierra Verde.  Salt water is really amazing in the extra float you get.  Planing- no whitecaps- on a 9.4.  In the pm, sea breeze came from the W and sailed off the beach at Pass-a-Grille on a barely powered 5.7.  Would have loved to have had a bigger wave sail that once.  Pass-a-Grille is at the extreme southern end of St. Pete Beach and a really neat spot- old school FL with all low rise bldgs only.
Tuesday, checked out Dunedin causeway on the way home- looked fabulous but too early for the sea breeze.  Ate Greek in Tarpon Springs then headed to Fred Howard Park.  First time I'd been there since 1979 or so.  Great place to sail in all directions, showers and no entry fee.  Highly recommended.  Simon was planing on a 2.7.  I was on a 7.7 happy as a lark.  Took my daughter out on the Start, she wasn't keen on sitting on the front while the board was planing.  I switched to a smaller board- seeing the bottom when sporting a 65cm fin doesn't seem too bright of an idea.

I was also in FL this past weekend (at Cape San Blass).  Good wind on the Gulf side on Sat with fully powered 6.5.  Big swells, but once you get past the braking waves, its actually easier then the short (wash board) waved on Lanier.
