Shell Point Keys trip

From the Shell Point club:

For several years, Fiesta Key has been the winter destination of choice for SPSC members.  Located on Florida Bay just west of Islamorada (Mile Marker 70), Fiesta Key offers excellent sailing for all skill levels, from beginning longboarders to bump & jump shortboarders.  The winter winds are typically northeast to east 10-30 knots, and make for a side to side-on launch.  We generally get 5 or more days of shortboard sailing, although someone sails every day.  On off days, we bike, go snorkeling at Sombrero Reef or just off the campground, fish, explore, and watch the most fabulous sunsets that you've seen.  We camp in a large field that they designate as the "overflow" area, but which is shaded and quite nice. Regarding amenities, the KOA campground is far from primitive and includes a large heated swimming pool, two hot tubs(!), a marina, two stores, very clean hot showers, outdoor grills, and a restaurant/bar.  The campground is lushly maintained with gorgeous invasive exotics, and the campground staff are windsurfer-friendly. Best of all, the cost is just $11.00 per person per night for tent campers in the overflow area.

For more information regarding this year's trip, scheduled for February 8-16, 2003, please call Perry Morris at 850-926-1001, or e-mail him at

Re: Shell Point Keys trip

Just got back from spending a week in the Keys over New Years.  Sailed 5 days and could of sailed more with the big stuff.  Needed a shorty only 2 days.  We always stay at America Outdoors campground on Key Largo bayside.  3 days were bayside and 2 days were oceanside but both sides are shallow and flat.  Chris I missed your post about being in Miami or we could of hooked up.  Screw this cold stuff, lets go again...like early March?

Re: Shell Point Keys trip

Year before last, Danny Johnson & his family, David Wade & I all joined the Shell Point group on their trip to the keys. It was a really great campground (and a super deal at $11 per night)and hopefully everyone knows what a great group of people the Shell Point group is.  They sure made us feel welcome. It seems like the wind was just so-so that year, but it was still great fun.
