Do I need any cushioning between my board the the rack? The rack has a strip of rubber on the top of it, which provides cushioning, but I'm wondering if I need any extra. I started thinking about this when was looking at bike racks yesterday, and then looked at some board racks, and they seem to go heavy on the cushioning, also shaped cushioning, but I'm wondering if that really necessary. I'd appreciate any opinions you have. Thanks

Hey Bruce - Hard to say if it's necessary or not, but it couldn't hurt. I have in the past used foam pipe insulation and it works well. It's got a seam where you can split it open to install on a closed bar. The trick then is securing it. Try a double wrap in several places of electric tape. Duct tape tends to deteriorate and get messy.
On my trailer I use the water foam noodle that kids use in the pools. They come in different sizes and some have just the right size hole to fit over a rack.
Two of these (at about $2 each) do my trailer for 4 boards and last a good few years.
It works, I'm happy and the boards don't know the difference
