Brand New Place to Sail  -  Lake Oconee

Lake Oconee

Lake Oconee is one hour east of Atlanta.  It is a shallow lake and maybe will heat up quicker than Lanier.  It also is always at high pool unlike Lanier.

Maybe just maybe someone will join me sometime and check this sailing site out.

Here is all the info:

I-20 east exit on exit 130 Greensboro, turn right on Hwy 44 go to Parksferry Campground off of Corey Staion Rd.  Or from I-20 go right on Hwy 44 to Old Salem Park off of Linger-longer Rd.  I was told they would be best on an east west wind.  But we need to go and see for ourselves.

I stopped in at Green County Regional Airport and they told me that I could call 706-453-7008 or (mobile phone 706-474-0060 ) and get the wind speed and direction.  This airport is located about 5 miles from lake Oconee.

Anyone interested in a new adventure??

who's going to take his formula board and check for stumps  ;D

let us know what you find... this could give new life to our Lithonia, Covington contingent.

Do we even have a Lithonia, Covington contingent?

I'll check out the Oconee spot on my next trip to Atlanta. You know, I-20 crosses over the northern part of the lake and I've been wondering for years if there was a good windsurfing spot somewhere on it.  Thanks for the information. If i get there before you have a chance to check it out, I'll send a report. BTW, in your message, by "east west wind" do you mean it's good for either of those directions as opposed to winds with N. or S. in it?

Re: Brand New Place to Sail  -  Lake Oconee

check out the picture of the sailboat on the Ga Power page in the Lake Sinclair section.  It must be blowing at least 1 if not 2.

From the georgia boater site:
"Essentially the lake is long and narrow and is fed by the Oconee River, Apalachee River and Richland Creek. The lake only reaches a mile wide at its widest point."

Looks like Long Shoals and Oconee Overlook are possibles.  If I were to drive that far, I'd go to West Point.  Just my $.02.  The lake looks pretty narrow.

Still, it's fun to sail new places.
